What are all of these Oblivion games?

To let you all know, my only experience with Oblivion was around five years ago when I got the game from my sister for christmas. Being a little kind, and with the box having no enchanting art, I immediately decided it wasn't worth my time and played other things, my brother played it for a while and then it vanished for some unknown reason.

I played it for about two hours, once. During that one time of play I got through the tutorial, exited the caves(with no knowledge of what the fuck was going on) and was immediately killed by tiger people. I believe I stopped playing after going into another dungeon and somehow being blessed with red magma armor and then having to fight a horde of zombies. I never beat them, I just quit the game and never picked it up again. Since then it has mysteriously dissappeared.

Now I'm thinking of getting the game again, at both my friends suggestion and at now looking at all of the cool things it contains. I know I was a tremendous prick back then for reading a game by it's box art but I do want to play the game now. My question is what are all of these addons for it?

There seem to be endless expansions for the game, but it was never clear to me whether these were other stand alone games or if they were expansions that could be purchased in a game of the year edition like with Fallout. So are they like the expansions to Half Life 1- completely different games like Blue Shift and Opposing Force, or are they additions onto the main game like Mothership Zeta and Operation Anchorage for Fallout?

They're DLC/expansions.
Pretty sure there's a GOTY edition you can buy.

They're extra quests, there's hundreds of hours of gameplay.

Oblivion is the fourth Elder Scrolls game, it's a fantasy RPG with a western style about it, generic but well-done.

It might be nice to get into the Elder Scrolls now, so that you'll be ready for Skyrim when it hits in November. Just keep in mind that Oblivion has a more generic fantasy feel than the other Elder Scrolls games.

Also, get it on the PC and you get access to practically unlimited content in the form of mods.

If you find the game too difficult, turn down the difficulty. Though when you said tiger people (Khajiits my favourite race) I laughed a lot. XD

Trust me you should get it for PC if you have a pretty good system, i've spent countless hours on it and with mods it'll never stop to get boring.

Morrowind was better.
No it wasn't!
*Heads for the anti-flame bunker*

OT: They're expansions. They add lots of content to the game and you don't have to start a new save to play them.
[sup]They're a bit like official mods...[/sup]

The Shivering Isles is a major expansion for Oblivion, and I actually like it better than the main game. If you're thinking about getting Oblivion again, definitely pick it up. Knights of the Nine adds a pretty cool and longer than average quest line. You also get some really nice looking armor for it. Other than those two, add-ons are mostly a new safehouse with a mini-quest to go along with them. They all add some really cool places (Wizard's Tower, Pirate's lair, Vampire's cave, Fighter's castle) but you can do without them.j

Just stay away from the horse armor.
