What books would make for a great game?

I would love to play a video game of the novel Oryx and Crake.
Exploring the post-Flood wastelands and the high tech cities of the past would be a great experience.

The Things They Carried would also be a really interesting twist to typical war simulations... although I'm sure PETA would have a field day with some of the content.
Surviving a flash flood, navigating through the rainforest, experiencing "toothy" culture clash... all with the dark, creative flair of the characters.

Any other thoughts?

Well I'm not sure I know of any books that would make a great game if strictly followed, but HP Lovecraft's settings have potential.

I know its been tried, but it could still be amazing.

Even the nods in Fallout 3 were pretty cool and they were only small quests.

They made some good Harry Potter games: open world version of Hogwarts to run around.
The Discworld games were pretty good too: point & click adventures wit Eric Idle.

I would really like to play a game based on Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. The plot would make for a really good tower defense game.

The Hunger Games could be a very interesting setting for a game, especially if there was some element of asynchronous gameplay between the contestant actually in the arena and someone working outside the arena. Of course, the progblem with this is simply that any game to use the setting would likely make the stupid mistake of essentially trying to retell the same story as in the books instead of just using them as inspiration.

Obviously HP Lovecraft..but also I'd say the Sandman Slim Books by Richard Kadrey with sort of a GTA feel. you play a hunter that's just escaped from hell, fighting vampires, zombies, ect. Would make for a cool open world game.

There you go, there's not many admittedly, but they do exist.

HP Lovecraft would be wonderful!
A game of Ender's Game could have potential, especially with the training and games- particularly the battle room and the virtual reality.
I'm really hoping a botched game doesn't come out along with the movie release.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

You would play as a simple human Hitchhiker, one of the few random chumps who miraculously (and possibly unwillingly) managed to be off-planet when Earth was destroyed. It's now your job to find a way to survive using only that little guide and anyone willing to give you a lift.

From there, you can do what you want. Travel across the galaxy, encounter strange civilizations, take odd jobs, try not to starve or lose your towel. However, the galaxy is a dangerous place for a simple human on their own. You would have to study the guide so you can avoid any nasty surprises and you would probably have to stay clear of the Vogons.

I'm not sure what the overall point of the game would be but it would be worth it just to be able to experience some of that galaxy in a open adventure.

I will repeat what I always say. Anything and everything written by Glen Cook would be a awesome open-world RPG and in some cases an epic space combat game. A Game of Thrones could be a great strategy or hell, even a good open-world RPG if the right people make it. Lord of the Rings, again would make a kick ass open-world RPG.

If you hadn't noticed yet I enjoy open-world RPGs.

The Wheel of Time! They could make an awesome game in that setting.

Also the Mortal Engines setting could make an awesome steam/cyber-punk adventure game.

This. Ender's Game is a book I revist once every two years or so. I would give a good portion of my wallet to see it made into a proper Action/RPG game. Even if they set it as a "secondary" character, where you were not Ender/Bean/Petra/Ali, any of them, just another student at Battleschool, perhaps a little before the coming of the "Ender", it would still be an amazing setting.

If we're including comics, then a GTA-esque sandbox shooter based on Judge Dredd would be pretty cool.

There was an FPS made a few years back called Dredd VS Death. It had some good ideas (namely its implementation of the Lawgiver and the arrest mechanic), but they were wasted on a generic FPS with Judge Dredd painted on.

The Dragonlance series as an RPG. Give me the Dragonlance series as a set of games and I'll shun all human contact to finish it. Unless you came over to talk about the Dragonlance series then I'd give you a few hours.

Both of those already exist. There's a Game of Thrones RTS game and a Game of Thrones RPG. Sadly I think both are supposed to be terrible, but I think that's mainly because they were made by some nobody developer/publisher.

There is a pretty great Crusader Kings II Game of Thrones mod though... It's actually what inspired me to buy that game in the first place :p
