What could Microsoft/developers do to get you interested in Kinect?

This question is aimed at people who aren't sold on Kinect yet. If you are already sold thats fine but I do question your judgment.

I like to think all hope is not lost for Kinect. Only perhaps that developers haven't yet figured out how to properly utilize the concept. However the fact remains that their hasn't been a single game announced that made me even consider the idea of dropping $150 come November. I'd blame the developers but I honestly can't think of a good game concept using the device myself.

It's a shame because despite the lack of ideas its hard not to see waisted potential. This leads me to my question. Does anyone one have any ideas on how to save the platform?

Ideas might include:

-Game concepts

-focus on a particular genre

-a way to make a decent goddamn shooter

If they made a game that gave me Force powers that actually worked straight from my palms, I'd be in to it.

There are ways, but developers might try to force the control into a concept. They have to think of it as a feature not as a platform.

A Starwars game is very possible. Certain motions with your hands would make certain force powers activate. Pointing your hand at an object then raising your hand could be force lift. But if the game only utilizes the kinect controls then it might have to be like a rail shooter. This game would work best if they came out with a controller like the move for it. That would open up the game possiblilties 10 fold.

I lied. I have one Kinect game idea. A flight simulator where you use hands (similar to the ones you use to pet tigers in that stupid pet simulator) to operate controls in a realistic cockpit. Go ahead and steal that one, developers!

If they make good games instead of gimmicky one trick ponies and mini-game collections. Then I'll be interested.

If they showed me a non-gimmicky game that actually worked in a demonstration that wasn't pre-recorded. Honestly, I think the only way that would work is if they made a Forza game for it.

Basically this.

However, controllers like Kinect will always have one thing against them when it comes to me; I honestly can't think of anything preferable to the tactile feel of a keyboard or controller.

I recently came to the conclusion that the Kinect is the most awesome DDR peripheral ever.

But I can't honestly think of a game that would work with it any better than the other motion control games out there, and I can think of a whole slew of games that will never work on the system as long as MS continues to insist their device is controller free.

But for DDR fans, this is totally the thing you should buy.

Really, unless the whole thing with it is handguns, making a shooter for Kinect would be pretty much impossible, I should think.

How about a fighting game? Slow down the motion so it's not going Street Fighter-fast, and throw in some hand-or-foot motion special moves, and you could have yourself a decent fighter.

Or if you map motion controls to any game involving hand-to-hand combat, you could have something of an interesting game there.

But I can't really think of any good game ideas past that.

If they had a massive bonfire where I could throw kinects onto a flaming pile of kinects I'd be interested.

Until then, it will remain a badly broken POS excuse for a peripheral and I hope anyone involved with the project gets fired and any business manager that thought it was a good idea gets imprisoned for some sort of fraud or mis-management.

No matter what Microsoft does, I don't think the Kinect will be on any shopping list of in the foreseeable future. Just does nothing for me.

Black & White 3. Kinect exclusive.

I think it's a game that could actually be adapted brilliantly to the Kinect. Perfect almost. Look at the interection between player and pet in Kinectimals, it's almost identical to that in Black & White.
And the gestures to cast spells in Black & White, that could actually work much better with Kinect. You'd have your whole body to chose a spell, instead of just your mouse pointer.
The only thing that would take some work would be navigating the map, but I honestly don't think that would be that hard to pull off as long as Lionhead were willing to put in the work and players were willing to deal with the slight learning curve.

That's what Microsoft would have to do to get me interested in the Kinect. We all know that Molyneux is a big fan of the technology and he's always willing to try new things. Just don't change too much Peter and don't talk about it until the game has gone gold, for God's sake.

recall all kinects, and apologize for wasting our time with a gimmicky dead end piece of peripheral technology.

barring mocap suit-holodeck-matrix technology, kinect really cant be adapted to any 'real' games, only one use gimmicks; there isnt nearly enough input possible to play, say, an rpg, or even an FPS for that matter.

i think of it like this; there are 2 possible ultimate future gaming platforms, either the star trek holodeck putting you right in the middle of a virtual world, or the matrix plug that puts your mind right in the middle of a virtual world. the matrix plug is a virtual dream machine of infinite possibilities where you could play as a sorcerer dog or an amorphous blob that takes the form of whatever your thinking of. the holodeck has a myriad of limitations; you could only be yourself in the game, your limited to illusions of everything humans cant do that can only be as realistic as the technology allows, instead of the dream machine where you actually can fly or punch holes in walls, because its basically gonna be as real as a dream, a virtual reality your brain is directly immersed in. the limitations of reality are much more demanding than the limitations of the human mind, so dream machine is the all around best choice.

case in point: kinect is working towards the star trek holodeck, which is the much more technologically difficult future with more limitations even if we do reach it. simple controllers are much closer to the dream machine matrix game system than kinect is to the holodeck, so.... there really is nothing to do with it. paraphrasing yahtzee, 'they should be focusing on the games, not the controllers; as it stands, basic game controllers do the job theyre supposed to do well enough'.

I tend to agree with Yahtzee, it's a step back from the connection to the game world. Instead of having buttons, you have something that has to interpret you. But even if it worked perfectly, it's still a vestigial limb. It might be the future of interfacing with menus, but I don't think it's the future of gaming.

Scrap it, as I feel all motion controllers should be. I've never had interest in them, but entirely getting rid of them, and forcing game makers back to regular games, with a normal controller, would certainly be of great interest to me.
