Have you ever bought something just for collection value?
If so what it is it?

My collections are:

Warhammer 40k and fantasy. This will become a game once I have time, but currently I collect and paint them no playing.

I bought a physical copy of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines even though I already own the steam version. But hey it is in near mint condition and was damn cheap.

Finally I have a semi complete collection of MTG angels. This is a very small collection but it has taken a back seat to everything else due to money.
I could claim to collect swords but the majority of them seem to be gifts or inherited.
What are your collectors? items?

I don't go out of my way to buy things that I collect, but I do hold on to all my movie ticket stubs. They're currently all pinned to a bulletin board in my room.

Model kits from Gundam and Macross. I've got about 90 in total now and they cover every flat surface in my room. Just the way I like it.

And I suppose my supply of movies and games tends towards collection size.

Weird toys I get for cheap at the comic shop when people don't pick up the stuff they order.
I've gotten an Usagi Yojimbo plush and Scott Pilgrim action figure that way, and they sit on my dresser alongside Godzilla, a statue of Hellboy I won in a Facebook contest, a plastic cow, and two of the Bone cousins (Fone Bone and Phoney Bone), two mushrooms from Mario (Red and Green) that contained candy, and some other stuff.
Scott, of course, does stand atop my stack of the graphic novels, bass guitar and Power of Love in hand.

every bottle of champaign has a cage over the cork. when the cage is taken off there's a metal disk on the top of the cork that comes off with the cage. i collect those disks and they usually have the make of champagne or sparkling wine imprinted on the disk. I want to collect as many disks from as many different types of drink as possible

Actually there wasn't a reason. Thank you very much for giving me one, now I should be able to at least partially avoid the accusing glares of those who see me pocketing bottlecaps at parties.

I use to collect shot-glasses, I have somewhere around 300 of them. It just got too expensive to keep up, and I don't have the room to display them all.

I also collect Doctor Who comics and DVDs, also too expensive to continue at the moment, but really that can be said about most things I like to do these days.

Geek stuff from games and movies I like. Statues, figurines, A LOT of posters. I also have a lot of books. Mostly Fantasy, True Crime, and Historical Fiction. I keep every book I buy.

Frog stuff; statues, figurines, and what not. I also get them as gifts since it's my favorite animal.

Magnets. Every place I go that is new (it doesn't even matter if the place is in the same state) - I'll get a magnet and put it on the refrigerator when I get home. My husband also goes on trips for work and brings me back magnets from wherever they sent him. I await my Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada magnet.

I should introduce you to my sister as she enjoys crocheting.

OT: I collect military history books. The more associated with my avatar and the period surrounding his lifetime, the better, though other periods accepted on the basis of military genius.

Old/ foreign coinage, carrying on from a collection bequeathed to me. Everything from Romans (Tiberius) onwards. I also help add to and collate information about my parent's collection of military cap badges.

No. That's a terrible idea. Knitters and crocheters are like Yakuza and Triads.
They don't mix well, and I've seen yarn stores torn to shreds in fights between the two groups. It's bad stuff.
My sister almost got hit in a drive-by by some crocheters when they saw her knitting.
