Are there any specific aspects of RTS games that you really hate or love?

Something that makes you want to purchase a game, and something that makes you hold back?

Entertaining: Controlling massive groups of dudes and sending them into massive battles.

Frustrating: Getting steamrolled all the fucking time in online multiplayer.

I tend to get steamrollered by CPUs when I play them. I'm really not very good so I steer clear.

I also find it hard to adequately focus myriad of different units I have control over in a real-time situation.

But you do like the gratifying feeling of sending hundreds of troops into an enemy base?

I like the building, defending and timing. What I hate is losing control in a pinch and sending the wrong guys out who get slaughtered and then I get trampled.

Oh yeah, it's pretty awesome. I have nothing against RTS games at all, I'm just fucking terrible at them.

Love - The idea that I'm in command of an entire army rather than just one character or a handful of characters

Hate - The fact that I kinda suck at RTS games so playing them is an exercise in defeat and frustration

Enjoyable: I really like building up tons of defenses and creating what you could call a doom fortress.

Annoying: When it comes to offense I almost alway end up click-dragging over every unit and telling them all to attack one thing, except in Company of Heroes, where that is sometimes a bad idea and the game forces you to be a good general.

I love the empire building aspects of games like Age of Empires (Wow! What a surprise!)

I hate missions where you aren't given time to build up and are engaged in a life-or-death struggle from the very beginning.

So, I guess I dislike the fact that the modern RTS is modeled more after Starcraft's pacing than after that of Children of the Nile or Caesar. It's turning into a multiplayer sport, like so many other genres, and woe betide the poor player who just wants to play.

Entertaining: Being good at it and controlling a whole army.

Frustrating: .. Nothing. I love them. And I'm also awesome at them, but that's beside the point.

Entertaining: I love building impenetrable defences and watching the enemy charge and fail repeatedly!

Frustrating: I'm utterly awful at RTS games. Once, I lost to the AI when using CHEATS!

Feels like a lot of people are scared away by RTSes because of the fear of losing. I can also relate to that. I suck at SC2 which is why I don't play it anymore.

I wouldn't say it's a fear of losing for me personally more so that constantly getting defeated gets tiresome and frustrating after a while

I was playing Warhammer:Battle March recently and was doing ok.Through trial and error I managed to make it to the final battle of the Empire campaign and then the game just decided to start kicking my ass over and over.I even dropped the difficulty level and still couldn't beat it so I just gave up in the end because it stopped being enjoyable

I like surprising my enemy with sneaky tactics!

I don't like those freaks in multiplayer who are ludicrously fast at everything :p

This bring back memories... tower rush warcraft 3 by orcs

Or trolling the base with 2 protectors near the gold mine while harassing with the demon hunter as night elf

Entertaining: Cheesy yet great cutscenes, C&C made this basically a selling point the live acting in their cutscenes.

Frustrating: Your enemies always build their base at an absurd rate that is damn near inhuman.

I tend to hate RTS that have no defensive play tactics.
Reason why I didn't enjoy 'Sins of a Solar Empire' at first - until the expansion came out.

I love being able to research tech, build up a few bases, and then go to war.

Screw 'zerg rush' crap.
