I sat down one day and thought that everyone who ever made something about space is quite stupid and unoriginal. Why do aliens breathe Oxygen for example? Why can't they require...Magnesium or so, why can they speak English or have a translator? Why the hell are they more advanced than us? what if they are still CAVE MEN at this time? What if they arent even bloody humanoids, but rather big blue turds with the speech function by smell or anything?
Thoughts?

This should really be in the off-topic forum but whatever, I certainly hope and believe there is some form of inteligent life out there, surely the universe is too big for us to be the only species capable of creating civilization.

Yay, science fiction time!

The chemical properties of Oxygen make it a very useful thing to be able to breath and it's very common in the universe. Replacing it with a different element for each different race would be more fantastical than having all alien races use Oxygen.

What is a convenient cliche is that all aliens would be able to breath the same mix of air. Even on earth there are species that breath underwater and on land. KotOR 2 had level where different aliens species were in a bar that was divided into different atmospheres for exotic races. Not many games go to that sort of length.

Why the hell are they more advanced than us? what if they are still CAVE MEN at this time?
Aliens are only there to shoot at in video games. Not even teenage boys are going to be happy playing a game where they can only use their huge guns to shoot slow, sickly aliens armed with pointy sticks. Not so true in novels.

Oh man, that sounds like a lot of work for the art team and voice actors.

I hope they are like all the hot alien chicks Kirk scored with on Star Trek.

Again, Mass Effect. There are races... not so advanced. Krogans are pretty primitive and brutal, even if they can travel in space and make weapons.

Or Star Wars is a better example. You meet a lot of races (in Games, of course) that don't have advanced technology. For example, those funny aliens in Jedi Academy that shoot at you with stinking sticks.

I don't get why people have such a problem with the idea of aliens being humanoid. That shape has worked out pretty well for us here on Earth - why is it so hard to conceive that the food chain and competitive evolution would be similar on other worlds?
If the aliens don't have advanced technology, how would we meet them? Most sci-fi scenarios involving aliens tend to involve them finding us - or at least us being at war with them. Would we be fighting a bunch of gelatinous blue turds without any weapons or starships?
Plenty of aliens are portrayed as requiring something other than Oxygen to breathe - the grunts in Halo wear breathing masks, one of the party members in Mass Effect always had to wear her suit. But most of the time, sure, they breathe oxygen. It'd make it kind of hard to take other Earth if the attacking aliens could only breathe a combination of sulfur and methane.

I personally hope aliens have the ability to give humans super powers, and have the face of Frank Zappa and nuclear missiles instead of legs, and ride around us in magic space buggys raining down rose petals and friendship

Meh, it's okay. I'd rather be flying robot with laser beam eyes.

Well, generally speaking people draw ideas from concepts that have already been established when creating something. The human being is extremely complex, every inch of our bodies and minds has a preset amount of reactions for every conceivable thing or person that could affect it.

Now, no one who's coming up with a bad guy for a game or a film is going to go to that much depth and attempt to create a being from scratch who's form will account for every single variable in the universe. Well, some creators at least put some genuine effort in, check out H. R. Giger, he created the Xenomorph, the snotty Alien from the movie Alien. That creature as well as the Predator have their own lineage and ancestral history.

To answer the initial thread question though;
Trees.

I've always thought it was closed minded for people to think, "There's no oxygen on that planet, so it cant support life." or "There's no water, and the atmosphere is too turbulant, it cant support life."

Life as WE know it.

Organisms develop to adapt to the place that they live. So if aliens exist there's probably sulpher breathing aliens, or beings that are made up of sand that don't require water.

I'm not sure I want or hope they look like something, it would just be neat to know that they A.) exist and B.) aren't going to destroy us all.

I could only hope that an advanced race of alien, if out there, would be extreamly intelligent, extreamly good natured, and willing to help the human race advance beyond the primitive ways it has now. I would hope they would advance us greatly in science and knowledge of the universe...and thus furthering man, not hindering or destroying. But you know what I could see more? I couldn't see a real alien race killing us for our resources, it's the universe out there for god's sake, an advanced race could replacate anything on our planet or probably wouldn't need it. Any real alien race out there who have noticed us are probably simply observing us and watching, trying to decide if we are primitive, violent idiots or if there is a potential for us to become more then what we are.

I think aliens will be single celled organisms that takes its energy either from breaking down water molecules and combusting them, or photosynthesis, and they'd be either carbon based or otherwise, and closer than you'd think.

I hope aliens will be symbiotic with humans and turn into suits that give you super strength and the aliens have an affinity for bonding with blonde 20-somethings with an internet handle ending with -lord.

I certainly hope that their guidebook to interacting with humans is not "How to Serve Man"! :)

You could've just said Trees, like me, but I like the Spawn suit idea better. Yeah, fuck that would actually rock hard- but they can't be like Venom, though, I don't want my bum too exposed and shiny. But Spawn's suit. Yes. YES!
