Im gonna say Left 4 Dead, cause from where im around, whenever my friends and I got to talk about upcoming games, i mentioned Left 4 Dead a lot and they haven't heard of it until a week before release. Also on forums like this one, never talked about it, or knew about it. It turned out to be one of the best games ever made.

so what game do you think was the most underrated and had no hype game

My vote goes to No More Heroes. I hadn't heard anything regarding it until a friend of mine picked it up and found it to be a fun game. About a month later, Yahtzee reviewed it.

No More Heroes for sure.
Left 4 Dead? Everyone around here seems to know and love that game. It definitely had hype.

Armed Assault, and now Armed Assault 2. Their made by BIS but rely on word of mouth to attract new people. However if your after a good war simulator, you cant beat their open battlefields.

Shadow of Rome
Seriously,CAPCOM need a next gen. version of this. Fuck all that RE bollocks and get back to Ancient Rome.

And the Dinosaurs, obviously.

But not together.

My choice would obviously have to be Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. That game was a seriously under-appreciated gem.

Only about three people I know knew about Team Fortres 2, and I know a lot of gamers. I've now convinced at least four people to get it, but that's beside the point. But since only the rest of the universe knows about TF2, that doesn't really count.
DragonBall Z: Burst Limit was a pretty good game, but I'm not sure how much that was hyped. If it was, I completely missed it.

Beyond Good and Evil would have to be one.

*EDIT*

Primal for the PS2 would also have to be one. I loved that game but I don't know anyone else that's played it.

Wow, everyone has said Psychonauts or Beyond Good and Evil. I think that would be hyped, whether it was official hype before release or fan hype afterwards makes no difference. Everyone on the Escapist has these games' nuts in their mouths or something. I like them too, but I don't think they're as underappreciated as we all think.

Freespace. I like big (huge) ships 600 times bigger than mine fighting on the same level, and me dodging.
Pretty much this. My best mate and I are about the only people I know personally that have ever played it, and I know quite a few gamers. I still have Freespace 2 SCP installed on all my machines and I play it frequently. I love making impossible missions for myself. So much awesome contained in a game...
