In your opinion, is it a gay slur or just a general insult? Maybe a term to call your friends or just something to be funny while gaming? (Insert bundle of sticks joke here)

For me, it was never a gay slur. Hell, I didn't know it's meaning until I was 14 when shouting it in class and the teacher threw me out. I just thought it was something like "dumbass" or "shithead"(I grew up in a foul-mouthed neighborhood). I always heard it from my uncles who would say something like, "Those faggots at the band council are fucking up so and so". So around age 12, me, my brother, cousins and friends started to call each other fags for insults(I forgot who started the whole thing, probably me). Now, I'm not saying that shouting ****** out in public is an acceptable term. It's just as wrong as saying "FUCK" out loud in front of kids. I just think that it should have another meaning. Hell, if you look it up in Thesaurus, it's nowhere to be found!

My brother is gay. He didn't know what it meant until a much later time like I did. But he also said it casually around people our age. I knew he was gay the whole time(yes, I think you are born that way) and I started to avoid saying it around him after found out its meaning. I still said it around friends and cousins. After my brother came out of the closet, he was still calling people ****** while playing Halo or Smash Bros. That's what made me think, "Hey, maybe it isn't a gay slur all the time."

Now, onto the internet. It's pretty damn obvious how its used: a casual insult to whomever is "acting like a ******". It is applied to females as well. 4chan has a different take on it. Lots of casual terms are thrown out, even people calling themselves fags (ex: Samefag, Oldfag, newfag, Canadafag, etc.). Most 4channers don't feel insulted at all when being called said-word(I'm getting tired of typing it), unlike Reddit. I feel that the majority of Reddit has this thought process of always having to be politically correct. Maybe it's pride from having a user name; or maybe it's the fear of being downvoted and getting spammed with replies. Someone made a comment on this, and I forgot where it was, but he/she said that "whenever someone makes a racist/gay joke, it's usually shot-down by the white man". On the Escapist, it seems like everyone is trying too hard to be politically correct. Now I'm not saying that you should call someone "on-topic" everytime they disagree with you, just loosen up a little.

Anyways, time to wrap this up. What are your thoughts on this? Do you get offended when someone says "fag" even if it's not directed at you? I apologize if you got offended by the amount of times I typed the topic word.

At this point in time, I think it has two meanings.

The first is a slur word for a gay man, and the second, like you said, is something akin to 'asshole', 'dickhead', etc.

Context is everything I suppose, sometimes it's hard to gauge that context.

I don't really care. I can see how some people would find it offensive, but...political correctness is stupid. No one should actually believe in black and white portraits of what is acceptable and what is not. I can see that words can be hurtful, and that's very sad and all, but attaching too much value to ****** or Retard or whatever else is a 'offensive' term atm is stupid. They may be crude, but justifying them by creating a sort of cultural shock value is stupid.

Words are just words. It's how you use them that matters. Insults are insults regardless of how politically correct or incorrect they are. Why make a big deal over it? it is pointless: ignorance, prejudice, and general douchebagery will be around as long as free will is. we can't change that, so why be offended by it?

EDIT: (btw, I'm probably among a very small group of forum goers who is actually hurt by stuff people write on the internet. It's stupid, but it is extremely easy to hurt my feelings.) My point with this edit I guess is that ALL words have the ability to be hurtful. Attaching any sort of negative stigma to certain words is just stupid.

I just want to know how the definition of the word "******" somehow shifted from "bundle of sticks for burning" to "homosexual" to "dickhead".

It's a general insult but I'll apologize, refrain and explain when in the presence of someone uncomfortable with it unless I want to annoy them.

Damn you got there first! I wanted to mention the food. Those are so delicious!

OT: if it is just jokingly I don't have a problem with it.

I don't mean it as a gay slur, but it's just so fun to say. Especially right after "Fucking". It's gravitated more toward "dick" or any other general insult now.

Its usually used by hatefull morons. Go figure. Anyone can call someone rude names. But i tend to find only the vilest of infantile angry people use the term. Its a correlation with the word itself. When you use it i have a pretty good idea what kind of person you are. Not to generalise but ive heard many people i admire use rude words. No one worth a damn has ever used that word in front of me. To clarify you arent worthless BECAUSE you use the word. Ive just only heard it said by basically worthless people. Maybe its a coincidence. But maybe not.

By all means if youre nice and say it power to you. Ive just never met you before. Im happy to be proved wrong.

I typically go by the rule of "if you have to use profanity, slurs, etc., then you probably don't have anything worthwhile to say" and that usually keeps me in the green.

Really, at the most basic level, using "******" as an insult is boring. Coupled with the potential insult that it acts as and that there are plenty of gay people I care about too much to even risk making them uncomfortable with uncouth behavior, its not worth it in my book to use such a term.

Besides, its much more fun to watch people react to when you use a series of old-fashioned or over-complicated adjectives to insult them.

Hmm, so you're saying you like faggots then?

Ha ha, not in context!

It's more like when I walk up to my friends and I'd say "Sup fags". Or just say out of habit while playing CoD or Smash Bros. Sometimes out of anger, like "Only fags use Metaknight!" I genuinely don't insult anyone. It's more of a "Fuck off" or just ignore them.

Isn't it slang for cigarette in England/Britain/UK and/or Australia (sorry if I offended any of the people from those locations, did not mean to suggest that they were the same or interchangeable or anything, just some similar linguistic heritage).

..And? You can apply the same contrived logic when using insults as greetings. In fact, it sounds like it would be even more fun that way.

No, that's just the diminutive version 'fag', though the derivation might well be from '******'.

Damn you, they're tasty and you beat me to the punch... along with a fair few other people, by the looks of things.

OT: The first thing that comes to mind is: fagotto, which is a musical instrument, the Italian variation of the bassoon, so named because it, unsurprisingly, resembles a big stick.

I'm with you on that one... though I think it's something to with the expression 'dumb as a post' insomuch as 'bright as a ******' i.e. an intellectual put down that just became a generic insult. How it became associated with homosexuality, I haven't the faintest idea.

Also, I thought '******' meant 'a sturdy log for burning' as opposed to a bundle of sticks... *shrug* meh...

I sometimes find myself thinking that the word is also German for the bassoon. It's written fagott but they are pretty much homonym.
And the first association of "fag" for me is a cigarette. Does this make me strange?

I don't call people faggots often horrible Americanism, you better spell colour with a 'U'. I prefer using the terms dick head, wanker, arse hole, I might start using the word arsepiece. I like the word choob don't use it myself but I think it's great. "You ran over your own head? You choob"
