I was driving to the dentist when I saw the letters DP on a license plate. Of course, it had a wheelchair symbol on it, so I know it stands for Disabled Person. However, this got me thinking:

Without any additional indicators, if you saw the letters DP, what do you think it stands for?

Disabled Person - explained above
Data Processing - bureaucracy galore!
Double Post - it happens to the best of us
Dual Purpose - applicable to M203 and MK19 grenade rounds
Double Penetration - ba11s are touching

What are other commonplace or mysterious acronyms have you come across that made you think, "What does that stand for?"

If I saw it on the Internet, I'd think Double Post or Derp.

Oh, and an acronym I didn't get: MAG before I learned it.

Deranged Puppies? Doubtful Phrases? Dyslectic pharmasists? Dear Patrick? (made this one up)
Oh yeah.. it's also an acronym used in a sexual matter.. but I think the once named above are more plausible.

Whenever a girl tells me that "all my friends are guys", it's only a matter of time before I use the acronym DVDA.

I was hoping that was a hilarious joke, then I was saddened to see that it was an actual word that meant the same thing I was thinking of. Ah well.

NYPD = New York Professional Dancers.

Now I can't take them seriously.

Okay, get this. Anyone living in the United Kingdom will probably be familiar with HMV, a store that sells mostly games, cds, dvds etc.
However, up untill now I had no idea what HMV stood for, in fact I never really thought about it standing for anything.
My girlfriend recently got a job there and told me what it stood for; His master's voice.
Which makes sense looking at the store's logo, a dog listening to a gramaphone, a recording of his master's voice.
Interesting, no?

I had to explain why someone was waiting for the AFB the other day... It means something's going to go very wrong, very shortly. It actually stands for an "almighty fucking bang"... <3 engineering slang.

Dip Phuck...I dunno, I'm immature.

I always wondered what AFK stood for when I used to play POTCO...which is apparently Away from Keyboard.

I didn't get the acronym "GRAW" for a while. I always thought people were just making random grunting sounds as jokes or something. Then I learned that it stands for Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.

Comic Geek Moment: :
It took me a little time to learn what S.H.E.I.L.D stood for, and I never found out what H.A.M.M.E.R stood for.

Also, playing TF2, it took me ages to learn that AFK meant Away From Keyboard. How long did it take me? I didn't know until I read the post by InnerRebellion two minutes ago.

DP used to stand for Displaced Person, my mother was born in a Displaced Person's camp in Germany after WW2. My grandmother is/was Lithuanian and was displaced by the Soviets after being in a Labour Camp in Germany during the War.
