I just finished reading 'Ivanov' (I also read 'The Seagull' last year) and was wondering what you guys at the Escapist think of his writing.

I personally enjoy it very much. His characters seem so vibrant and their language is so expressive. I really enjoy reading it basically.

Ah, I love Chekhov. Best character in the original series of Star Trek.

As for the other Chekhov: he was an absolutely luminary writer. But then, Russia seems to have been rather good at producing literary titans.
I came hoping for Pavel and I got Anton, oh well. I am always wary of reading in translation. I have read a fantastic translation of Camus' The Stranger, and a woeful one. I don't know which is more representative of Camus' work. That said, I have enjoy what little I have read of Chekov, some short stories and Uncle Vanya. A bit bleak but if you are in the right mood, excellent.

Bloody awful. I can't be bothered with the man. Plays of inaction have no appeal for me whatsoever. I'd give him another try, but not until I've exhausted the rest of Russian literature.

I'll head back to Gogol' for now. :p
