everyone on here probably remember games like monopoly, jenga, sorry, and other classica but what ever happened to creating new board games? did video game industry kill it? were all the ideas taken up?
Sorry but I have played many board games and I have reason to believe they are all very dull, simple and boring. Even with a full party of people who you find fun and interesting somehow the act of playing a board game makes everything monotonous and slow.
A surprising number of board games have found there way to consoles. The first multiplayer I went on was actually monopoly on the internet... shit more than a decade ago (I think I was about 4-5).
Perhaps you should take a walk into the game aisle of your local department store. Nothing happened to them, they're going as strong as ever. Sure there's a lot of rehashing and rebranding of popular games, but when don't we see that? There are still more games being made. If you're lucky enough to live near a gaming store that sells board games, you'll see a ton of wonderful ones just asking to be played. They may not have the big press and marketing of a computer game or the latest Star Wars spinnoff game, but they are big on quality and fun.
I still try to get people to play board games. I still play Monopoly, Risk, and Chess here and there, and Magic: The Gathering even though it's not technically a board game. Sometimes it's fun to be in the same room with and be able to look at the person you're playing against. It's make things feel a lot more human.
Are you crazy? There are plenty of board games coming out these days. Just because Milton Bradley hasn't come out with anything new recently doesn't mean that Steve Jackson Games has gone out of business.
A board game is the thing that has wasted the most hours of my non-school life at this point in time. Although it isn't a social one. Yes, electronics have been bad to the boards.
Fantasy Flight makes awesome board games, like Ingenious, Cosmic Encounter, as well as board-game versions of Starcraft and World of Warcraft. Rio Grande makes games like Puerto Rico and Carcassonne, both of which are excellent.
I hate Monopoly with a burning passion. The entire game is "it's your turn, roll the dice to see how fucked you are."
