What ever happened to bots?

I'm pretty sure that on the PS2(and further back) almost every FPS had a full complement of A.I. bots for filling gaps in multiplayer...and yet there seem to be none on latest-generation consoles. Basically every other aspect has been improved, and yet this part seems to have taken a step backwards. Anyone else have any opinions on this?

I miss them...The only recent game I played with bots was Gears 2.

"rockingnic" below said Killzone 2, but I never played it, personally.

They're a lot of effort to code well and never come anywhere close to the real thing or train you for anything.

maybe all the developers gave up on bots because they knew that they couldn't make an FPS with bots, as epic as Timesplitters :)

I was going to say, the only one I know of that has them semi-effectively recently is GoW2. They turned up their accuracy to account for their lack of common-sense. I hated it in online multi-player when they replaced quitters with bots because I feel like I was smarter than most of the actual players, but I'd be rolling to avoid being shot and would come up without a head because some bot got a hold of a sniper.

Now I gotta try KZ2 ASAP...that's moving up on my wishlist of PS3 games for sure

I think it's that companies are spending the time and money programming online multiplayer things rather than AI bots, because AI are hard to program probably

Timesplitters series was one of the finest for bots.

I recently found a game (which I got for free, don't ask me how) called Perfect Dark Zero o Xbox 360 that does Bots quite well, in fact, I thinks its a lot like Timeplitters with the bots and multiplayer.

Killzone 2 I think is the most recent.
Never played it. Thanks!
It's the one game that I like to kill time with because the bots are relatively smart and are good about completing objectives since KZ2 is a objective-heavy based game. It's great for those who want to play multiplayer but don't want to deal with real people. It only allows up to 15 bots in skirmish but the maps are made for 32 players but it's still fun.

Perfect Dark (N64) had really good bots for the time. I used to play 2 player and fill in the rest with several Dark bots and some easier ones just for fun. The Dark bots were very tough. At least I think that's what they were called, it's been so long...

An FPS without bots better have a fucking good singleplayer.
This and if not, time to start killing things. I'm gonna go play Pistols in 007 Nightfire with every bot on easiest.

I play CS Source with bots when my favourite servers go offline or are full. But it's not as good as playing with real people.
