I recently saw a trailer for a 70's horror film called Demon Seed and I have to say it freaked me out. It's was about a super computer that becomes self-aware, and rapes a woman so she can give birth to a human/computer thing.

It sounds stupid I know but freaked me out, so I wanted to know, what freaks you out in horror films?

Anything psychological, or horror without form. The second the 'monster' becomes real/tangible, it just ceases to scare me. I get more freaked out by the ghostly/supernatural aspects.

"True terror is not in the moment, but in the anticipation."

Suspense is always much more terrifying than any amount of shock-gore.

Holy crap, I've actually watched that movie! Good stuff actually, hmm I'd say it's the music, and they atmosphere of the movies more than anything.

I get more scared by what is unseen. A shadow, a fleeting glimpse... Whatever is in my mind is far scarier than anything cinema can come up with.

As such I appreciated (but wasn't really scared by) a recent popular scary movie because it didn't play the jump shock game and didn't deluge you with lousy CGI. I possibly would have been sacred if some stupid dickface hadn't spoiled the ending for me some weeks ago. As a result the punchline didn't work for me.

This. Suspense kills me. Blood and gore don't scare me.

But I also don't like to listen to people scream. I'm a wimp about horror movies. I hate them. Listening to people scream gives me nightmares.

Because you barely ever saw the Alien. The entire film was buildup, anticipation, uncertainty. You didn't know what it could do, why it was doing it, or what would kill it. And it was perfect.
I very, very rarely get scared by horror films, but when I do, this is why. In fact, I still can't comfortably go to a certain spot in my house at night because I once, many years ago, had a nightmare about something leaping out at me there. It's things that lurk where I can't see them that scare me the most. Especially when I'm not sure what they are.

Pretty much this word for word.

Also anything where the bad guy is human. I mean seriously the thought that a person could theoretically, possibly even if its highly unlikely scares the crap-o-la out of me.

This. Silent Hill 2 is the first game where I actually thought...

"Oh God I'm going to wet myself."

Suspense. A GOOD horror film will have a lot of it, and follow it up with something actually happening.

Any movie that can make me so tense I can't help but squirm in my seat is doing a good job. Once they reveal the ghost/killer/alien/monster, all the tension is gone. Films that did this well: Alien, The Ring (kinda), Jacob's Ladder.

Games usually do it better imo. When you're actually playing as the main character, the tension is palpably more. Silent Hill... sigh. Back when the games were good (2 & 3), I couldn't play them for more than an hour or two before I'd have to get up and walk away to let my muscles uncoil and my lungs fill up with air. Same with the Fatal Frame games - god, they were scary.

I'm scared that there won't be any more ACTUAL scary movies. I really hope I'm wrong, but the recent "horror" films have been underwhelming to say the least.

On my paper round, I have to deliver to these apartments where I have to use the stairs to navigate the floors. These comprise of boring looking white halls.

But since I had this weird nightmare I have slight difficulty getting through these halls. That part in Silent Hill 2 didn't help either. I get the feeling as if I'll turn the corner to find something unexpected - like an inexplicable change in the corridor layout.
