What game do you consider the best current gen console shooter?

Here is a list of possibilities to get you started:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty 5: World at War
Gears of War/2
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter/2
Halo 3
Killzone 2
Rainbow Six Vegas/2
Resistance: Fall of Man/2

Feel free to add others to the list.

Rank them as you please. For me, I think I would have to go with CoD 4 - it had a fantastic single player (the sniper level was my favorite level of all single player levels on this list), and a fun, addicting multiplayer. Following closely would be by Gears of War/Halo 3/Gears of War 2 (I'm not even sure which Gears of War I like more), the first two (imo) rounding out the top 3 of multiplayer (with CoD 4) in shooters. Gears 2 and Halo 3 both had really fun campaigns, as well though.

Notable games from this list I haven't played: CoD 5, I don't have a thing for WWII shooters; Killzone 2: haven't been able to play it yet though I'm looking forward to.

(And yes I did a search and could not find a topic like this already so there.)

Half Life 2.

Isn't half-life two in the generation of the original xbox? That's where I first played it. Now with the orange box I realize they did have to cut bits (in some cases large bits) out of levels but it still played just fine on the xbox.

As for my choice for best shooter I say CoD4. I'm a real military nut and it was a great game.

also I have to respectfully disagree with your opinion. It was fun (especially the super gravity gun that can throw soldiers around) but it's not the best in my opinion.

Console means designed for console. If its a port of a PC game, doesn't count. So that nullifies Portal (which is a puzzle game anyway), Bioshock, TF2 and Left 4 Dead.

What qualifies a console shooter? Would Left 4 Dead count? If so, that's my choice. That or Portal, I suppose.
Edit: Just to clarify, are we talking "the best" (whatever that means) or "my favourite"?
If the latter, I stick with my above choices. If the former, disregard me, I'm not enough of an FPS connoiseur to make an informed decision, even if I actually saw any merit in labelling one game objectively "better" than the competition.

For MP, I really like Halo 2, it has the most varied mp game types I've seen, and it has forge. Forge has most of the pluses of a map creator but with almost none of the draw backs, all the maps will have been designed well.

Now for campaign, I really don't know. I feel G.R.A.W. 2 (its Warfighter, not Warfare), had one of the most varied and FUN campaigns, same for Frontlines: Fuel of War, but I would rather have a story that I really interacted with more-ish. But I nominate both of those games for best single player campaign.

dang there all pretty good if you ask me

Left 4 Dead annoys me because the graphics look terrible, but on the other hand it looks so fun to play haha

um Gears of War made my life complete i dont know which one is my fav GOW was more fun but GOW2 had more stuff to do, being able to move whilst dying was a savior and bots on multilayer made kicking your mates ass even more fun and chaotic haha.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is insane and seems rather realistic but is still fun and the best thing is that you can pick it up for 20 bucks these days

Ghost Recon is a little old now maybe, but the strategy side of it and the stealthy style play is a good time waster fun game

im not really a COD fan and Halo doesnt really tickle my fancy after i got addicted to cover thanks to GOW.

Killzone 2 or Killz One 2 (thank you the Master's Challenge) killzone has to be one of the best releases of 2009 and makes me understand the pain that PS3 owners must go through when they wanna play GOW. i really hope i can find my way to a PS3

One game you missed that i think is a lot of fun is Army of Two, the masks are totally awesome just sometimes they dont match the armor which can be annoying but the custimisation of the guns gave me plenty of thrills. but its multiplayer is useless haha

Half Life 2 has the story, the legacy, and the sheer awesomeness, while Killzone 2 has the graphics and the excellent mechanics.

It was close but I have to side with Gordon on this one.

Left 4 Dead. No two ways about it. Proof that gameplay > graphics, and that if you're going to spend upwards of three years on a game, you're better of making something new and special than just a pretty sequel. Best multiplayer experience I have ever had.

It doesn't look bad at all. When I saw it I thought it was a good looking game, and I stand by that. Most of the "console" shooters you said were also PC games. IF you're going to say console shooter, at least have exclusively console shooters.

i dont mean that there awful or anything the graphics are fine once you get use to them (for me) just that when i first saw the game on youtube i thought that its was pretty bad it fouled me in the same way Fallout did just because is saw the horror of all FPS the hands and guns always look faulty and like plastic.

it really depends on your view, but compared to a game like crysis or gears of war or killzone 2, Left 4 Dead is on the lower end of the graphics scale

I love Perfect Dark Zero, it didn't really improve shooters, well, maybe it started with the cover mechanic but everything the game did was great and nothing felt like it shouldn't be there.

But from the list in the first post:

I hate the CoD games.
Gears1 was nice but I only played it at a friend's house, not enough time for a good opinion.
I don't think there's a word in the English language that accurately describes how much I hate Halo 3.

I never played the other games, but I did see a few minutes of Killzone2 gameplay and I liked what I saw.
