Okay, I know good movies based on video games have been quite rare, considering how in live-action Hollywood only has Prince of Persia under its belt.

But several animes have have actually adapted games into film reasonably well, such as Pokemon. plus many fan-made films like Fallout Nuka-Break actually turn out really, really good, so in a way, you could argue that making good movies based on games is difficult, but NOT impossible.

And I've also heard that Nintendo has recently expressed interest in doing a Legend of Zelda movie, granted, they said they'd want to make it interactive in some way if they went with the idea, but still.

Anyway, what game or game franchise do you think can most likely be adapted into a film?

My guess would be the Starfox franchise, since apparently Nintendo has lately been holding tight reins on their IP, any studio that would want to make the film would have to deathly avoid making drastic changes to the source material (I'm look at you, Super Mario Bros movie), plus, the fact the cast consists almost entirely of Petting Zoo People (look it up on TV Tropes) means you'd have to strictly use animation, be it CGI or traditional hand-drawn animation. Plus, the Starfox series has had enough sales for most people to already know about the franchise, so general audiences would expect a movie based on the games to be at least reasonably true to the source material.

As for how it could be a success, well, Starfox is known to be an action-packed, upbeat space opera, and when was the last time outside we really saw that? plus, the big selling-point for the movie can easily be the promise of intense and epic space-fighter dogfights, which I don't remember seeing in recent films. Plus the space opera setting already made the games fairly cinematic, so you should have plenty to work with.

It can be a space opera targeted mainly for kids and fans of the Starfox games (or even Nintendo in general), which by now are people in their 20's or maybe even early 30's, which I think has to be a decently large audience.

Anyway, what single game or game franchise do you think can be easily made into a successful film?

Starfox could be a good one. Warcraft 1-2 would be an excellent choice to live off the Hobbit-LOTR hype that has been revived. Diablo 1-2 would also be a good choice, just to see Deckard Cain say "Stay awhile and listen" on the big screen. Metroid would also be a very good choice.

Metal Gear, it pretty much already is. I feel the hardest part about adaption that would be the timeframe.

I did just realize how many games I played have been adapted to anime, even if most of the anime were bad.

Silent Hill easily could be made into a successful film, the problem is it hasn't. The first one was OK, I guess. The second one was an insult to the source material.

Silent Hill as a series has always been about separate stories (besides 1 and 3) so it could be made into a film. Just take the concept of the town, slap in a poor sod and make a great story. Oh and don't go overboard on the silly horror and Pyramid Heads.

Halo would be pretty good I think, probably why they were going to make one anyway. I would like to think the way Halo handles aliens would be welcoming to uninformed viewers. Aliens are usually so one-dimensional, the Covenant is more interesting than your average evil alien race/group. It could either be done all in CG like the Halo Wars cutscenes, or live action like the miniseries and commercials they made.

Metroid could work, though they would need to make it so that it wouldn't remind people too much of the Alien franchise.

After seeing Pokemon Origins done so well, I wouldn't mind seeing the other Pokemon games condensed into standard movie length.

Well I could see Ratchet and Clank working well, so let's see how that movie does when it comes out in 2015. There is also speculations of a Sonic the Hedgehog movie being made, well another one since the first movie was the awesome OVA with Hyper Metal Sonic. ^.^

They'd also need to have it so that it doesn't remind Metroid fans of...Other M...XD

Other M? Never heard of it. (wink wink)

I would actually like a completely zero spoken dialogue film for Metroid. That would fit the feel of the games much better.

Thief I think could be made into a decent film, it has an interesting protagonist, a fun setting, and Garrett dodging guards, stealing valuable treasures, and dealing with strange exotic abominations would be just as fun to watch as to play.

I think Just Cause would also work... mostly because there's not much you can ruin there. You practically already have Antonio Banderas running around an extremely cheesy "blow up everything" action movie in those games anyway, so if they were to make a movie of it just for a good ol' action thrill ride, I can't see how many people would call foul.

Hmmm I'd say Grand Theft Auto but Crank and Crank 2 were pretty much exactly that.

I'd love to see Starfox in an epic Gundam style anime series or mini (OVA?).

Pretty much any car porn game translates to a Fast & Furious knockoff.

Halo did get a much lower budget movie in Forward Unto Dawn, the YouTube series that hyped Halo 4 . It's shown up on streaming now stitched as a single movie and I really liked it.

God of War and Devil May Cry have my vote for just crazy 300 style slomo slaughterfest movies. Simple stories, great cast of extras/monsters and good settings. I loved the DMC anime, but live action would be tits.

I was trying to nut out how to make a minimalist stage-play of dark souls... very light on dialogue, heavy on visuals... but i could not even come close to figuring out how to make it remotely coherent so i gave up lol

That being said, i honestly think the campaign stories of the first starcraft would make an excellent movie.

That or Bejeweled...

Kingdom Hearts with Dakota Fanning as Larxene...

OT: Jak and Daxter, hands down... as long as you keep it away from Christopher Nolan or anyone "worse" than him in terms of writing, directing, and/or be an executive producer[footnote]I have ABSOLUTELY nothing against Nolan, but we're trying NOT to make this a realistic take on the source material, mind you...[/footnote], then it could work...

CGI the whole movie, make it in 3D (okay, maybe not 3d), has a good self-contained story (even if it could lead to potential sequels later on), and either keeps the same VAs as in the games or finds VA that can do the characters justice should make this film an okay adaptation overall...

(Yeah... Any other ideas I had in mind were either based on a movie already or did become a movie in some way... like Halo Legends...)

The problem is that a Silent Hill movie already exists, and it's called Jacob's Ladder.

Fact of the matter is that most well regarded games have taken their theme and style from popular movies. So when you turn that game into a movie, it'll just end up as a lesser version of the movie that inspired the game.

I always felt a Samurai Pizza Cats approach would work best for a Ratchet and Clank adaptation. Just make it a wacky TV series with the type of humor from the first three games, neglecting all that forced drama of the Future series.

The movie I fear will just be some run-of-the-mill CG flick that'll go straight to video.

Well obviously the answer is Minesweeper.

Or of course you could always just go with Left 4 Dead, but then again the whole zombie thing is already being done to death....so let's go with Arthas's subplot in Warcraft 3, just because I like the fallen hero archetype.

David Cronenberg presents - The binding of Isaac

I also think Dishonored could be adapted well

Peter Jackson developing The Elder Scrolls movie. Now hear me out, I'm not talking about adapting Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim into a movie, but adapting it's back story. For example, the arrival of the Nedes in Tamriel and their eventual war with the Elves, the disappearance of the Dwemer, or even the recent war between the Thalmor and Imperial army.

I love the world that Dishonored created but you're going to either come up with a new story to set in that world or hire a magician of a writer to de-cliche-ify the existing story. Now I'm not saying the existing story is bad but rather IMO that the things that make the game unique are the things that the player chooses (i.e. listening to the heart a lot, picking different routes, etc.) and that those elements don't seem like they'd translate well to a scripted narrative.

My two suggestions are ones that I frequently toss out there in the "games as art" and/or "flawed games you might not have tried" discussions in 'El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron' and 'Folklore'. Both of these games do an absolutely wonderful job of world building only to be let down (moreso Folklore than Shaddai IMO) by their writing and gameplay. Well since we're making a movie the gameplay isn't an issue and the writing (theoretically) has no where to go but up. I just think that the worlds that these games created are too interesting to waste on B-/C+ games (I would also accept remakes of both games).

Video game movies run into an adittional problem than other adaptaions do. It is whether to do an original story in the universe of game X or just do an adaptation of said game or games. If you do a straight adaptation, you will probably have fans of the game saying something to the effect of "I've already seen/done this I want something different." Also, even if it as adaptation, you don't have the interactive elements, so things have to be changed or altered accordingly, which begets things if the players didn't agree with the choices the writers/producers of the movie make along the story. If they do an original story in the universe of, but don't get things perfectly, you will get things like "well it's not really this game or they would have done better if they would have just made the story from game #x"

That isn't even including the part where they have to include parts of the movie where they need to bring people completely new to the franchise up to speed without boring the more knowledgable people.

Video game movies are a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" type of proposition for all involved. Yet they still try making them, and we still go to them, ever hoping that one day someone will find the balance between the two.

Final Fantas.... No, wait.
Prince of Pers.... No, wait.
Mario Brot..... No, wait.
Tomb Rai.... No, wait.
Max Payn.... No, wait.
Wing Comman..... No, wait.
Mortal Komb.... No, wait.
Hitma..... No, wait.

Um, God of War? I could see this as a summer blockbuster. Clash of the Titans, only, you know, good.
