I'm hosting a video game birthday party in January for my 23rd birthday. Thought I'd check in with you escapists on games that would be suitable for both causal and hardcore gamers, and fun in a party setting for:

- PS2
- PS3
- Wii

and also old school consoles such as the SNES or Sega Megadrive. I've been checking out Drinking Games here, and I'm curious if you guys have any fun habits to add.

Fighting games like Super Smash Bros or Soul Calibur can be fun for parties. You also can't go wrong with classic Super Mario, but I don't know how to make drinking games out of them. (Every time you get a Smash Ball take a shot?)

Pretty much any game that has more than 2 player co-op for multiplayer.

Just don't be "That guy" who has beaten the game on Hard and just completely destroys everyone else because you know the game well. Unless of course your friends with a bunch of "That guy"s

Also, Rock Band is still fun though it is losing it's fun (mainly because I played the hell of out Guitar Hero 2, 3 and Rock Band 1, 2, and 3) And unless you're playing head to head (trust me playing 4 player co-op is a LOT more fun) don't try to be "That guy"

Mortal Kombat's a good one (the most recent game, of course). Then again, any remotely accessible fighting game should be good for parties assuming the legitimately skilled people don't insist on manning the controller at all times.

There's no party quite like a drunken Wii party... just don't call it that, people will get the wrong idea. Wii's focus on multiplayer semi-shovelware party games is excellent entertainment when played by inebriates who are equally if not more entertaining (especially when one of your friends "accidentally" starts smacking the other players while playing WiiSports Tennis).

Essentially take your pick of any 4-player game, they're all good for this. Just make sure those wrist straps are secured, otherwise you'll end up with holes in things and broken wiimotes.

Fighters are always winners, and as another poster mentioned, can't go wrong with music-based games either, whether they involve playing or dancing to it.

For one that hasn't been mentioned, how about the latest Mario Party, as long as you just play the mini-games? The main game is too dangerous to friendships to risk it. Though any minigame compilation will work, too. My roommates and I would often have a blast with the minigames in Rayman Raving Rabbids 2!

Oh, and don't forget Mario Kart. Another instant win right there.

Dungeons and Dragons. If you play that, your party will never end. EVER.

Also, it's really fun.
