What has improved over time?

Nearly every video I watch on youtube these days are filled with comments about how great it was before, and how everything sucks right now, even though most things they consider to be great, existed before they were even born.

So I though we should dedicate a thread to celebrate progress, and the new things in life.

I'll start by saying that I think that gaming as a whole has improved. The great games still exist and remain great, most of the new big hits now are indie titles (meaning that they are dirt cheap), and a lot of new games are being funded through kickstarter, meaning that we can have a bigger voice in what we want to get made and not.

I'm going to go for the obvious choice here and say technology.

There's no denying how far we've come since the olden days.

And I would know, I watch the Gadget Show.

My sexual prowess has improved over time. It's hard to tell though because it started so high to begin with.

There's no way I could look at the days of dial up through rose colored glasses.

The general quality of (most) human lives have certainly improved over time. More people live longer and dies less horribly. Plus, if some of your organs fizzle out and dies, we can get you new ones. That's rather impressive, when you think about it.

But really, we've given parts of natural selection the finger. Poor eyesight isn't a desirable trait in the wild, but flip it, we've got glasses now. We're partially running the show, baby!

(And because I know it's probably going to get brought up, no, it isn't really a bad thing. Natural selection is just something that happens, not a divine plan to separate good from bad)

Oh, and we can keep and pass on about 10.000 years of combined knowledge very easily, by simply putting it on paper. We can store something as vapourous as an idea as a physical object for later use, provided someone can read the language. We can communicate through unlimited time. It's magic, I tell you. And it's improved, too. Anyone with half a brain can learn to read and write these days. We're getting somewhere.

Ah, I loved the chirping of the modem. Now it's so quiet and I can download MEGABYTES in a mere minute, as opposed to a megabyte for minutes. No, I think I prefer it like before - not being able to talk on the phone while browsing the net was such a bonus, too!

OT: Well, everything. Or pretty much everything. People have a longer timespan, more food, more entertainment, better technology, more opportunities, less risks, less problems. Overall, that is. Everything is constantly evolving to be better.

Well when you put it that way, I do miss the hypnotic dial tones.
I'm pretty sure they included some kind of coded message that rewired the brain when a person was forced to listen to them.

This. I remember my Mom literally timing me every time I went on the internet to make sure that the phone bill wasn't too high.

Also, girl's hair styles. Have you seen the hair of the 80s and 90s? Yuck.

Nutrients has gotten better since people were shorter back in the past. Even most junk foods is probably better than it was in the past (less or no artificial stuff and salt).

Everyone says technology but I'm not sure computers have really come along that much. They're cheaper & you could argue that tablets are more intuitive, but at the end of the day you're still typing in text to a dumb machine that stores it in pretty much the same way as 50 years ago.

My choices are healthcare, society, and education. We're living longer, stealing from others less, and are more intelligent than ever before.

While that is true, technology is still becoming more prevalent. You could argue that the wheel is still just a circular shape - the same one as thousands of years ago, and yet having it around has improved things.

I see what you did there, it's a reference to your screen name, isn't it?

OT: Health. We live longer, can cure more diseases than ever, and more cures are coming (disregarding the superbugs that go along of course), and even though I rarely get sick and have only taken any kind of antibiotic once as far as I know, it's good to know it's there.

Cameras have gotten way better. And cheaper too. So have computer cases for custom builds. I now longer have to drill holes to cable manage.
