What I fail to understand about all the big titles coming out this season.

One can argue that it's been a pretty good last few months for gamers. Battlefield 3, MW3, Saint's Row the Third, Skyrim, and AC Revelations, just to name a few, have all hit in a short span of time and have been the subject of major hype for the past year or more. Games people have been nearly salivating over in anticipation.

Yet I can't help but notice this trend going on in message boards for the games that have been released, and this trend makes me wonder how in the world the developers are actually making money.

The gamers apparently hate all these games.

I managed to hit what I call my 'Trifecta' this year. Basically I pick three games a year that I decide to be must haves, and I get those. Simple concept. So while I happily enjoy BF 3, Skyrim, and Saint's Row 3, it appears on the message boards I've visited dedicated to these games, that I should, in fact, have simply given the nice people at Gamestop my money in exchange for shoving shards of glass in my eyes, because I'm assured by these fine internet experts, that that would have been the better use for my money.

I don't get it.

The reviews are good. If you actually talk to somebody who's played one of these games, then you're likely in for a good five minute gushing about how great they are. And yet go online and all you'll seem to find is people complaining about every single little facet of a game.

I don't know, is it me? Am I blind to what good games are now? Or is this how people show support for a game these days, by mercilessly ripping apart everything about it, and doing their best to tell the developers that they're no good.

Sigh.

Everyone's trying to be Yahtzee. I say, just play them and form your own opinions. Also, don't bother with the whole broken glass thing. Trust me, I tried that once.

Well people like to criticize things , human nature . Also , when a or sevral games are hyped people tend to be more dissapointed in the little things that they don't like. Also letting people know what was bad helps remedy the problem ( although bad and good are subjective and you cannot please everybody . Plus on the internet it's cool to hate .

Also inb4 welcome to the internet.

I agree. You shouldn't post a thread when the only real goal is to express your opinion alone.Yes I know you stated a question, but it revolves more around you in the end.

I can't say I have any serious critiques of these games, Skyrim (which I love to death) having been the only one I've played. That said, what I find quite perplexing is why they've all been released in such close proximity to one another. I can't help but imagine that any one of them might be doing better if it hadn't released at the same time as the others. Most of us can't afford to buy multiple games at once. Hell, even when I can I don't like to. If I get two games at once, I never end up enjoying them as much as I would have had I bought them one at a time, allowing myself to invest fully in that game for a period of time. Doing it the other way I can never fully enjoy a game, because I'm always haunted by the nagging feeling that I ought to really get my money's worth out of the other as well.

I suppose the obvious answer to my question is that we're nearing that inevitably shitty time of year when spoiled brats are given gifts that they'll appreciate for the first 45 minutes, all because a lot of people think someone might have been born in a manger. All the game companies want to have the game parents buy for their impudent hellspawn. Still, many of them aren't going to be buying multiple games either, especially not brand new $60 titles.

... can't we just cancel this horrid "holiday" this year, and release big titles in such a way as that they might be spaced out in release times... you know, like a sane person might do.

Have I gotten off topic?

People hating stuff on the internet? Never. Personally, I can't stand people who hate on everything about a game. Of course games have problems, that is a given. People need to understand to take things for what they're worth, and not compare them what they expect games to be. Which is basically why hype absolutely destroys a game.

Well...constructive criticism isn't bad, persay. 'LOL ONLY NUBS PLAY THIS GAME IS SO PRO' is not constructive criticism, though.

The extremely vocal minority assumes everyone is like them. It should also be noted that most of these people have stupidly specific tastes in games and/or don't understand what the game is.

For example, I have had people say to me that morrowind is not only better than skyrim, but is also graphically superior. For some reason they can't play an elder scrolls game without their favourite faction being represented in some way, or dark elves haves a silly greenish tint (because apparently that's how it's SUPPOSED to be).

My favourite is when it becomes clear that they only like the older games better because either A) they have it modded straight to the titties, or B) they were easier to break/abuse (no more enchantments that stack when they really shouldn't, no more holding one button down and gaining 20 skill etc.)

Another big player is blinding nostalgia. they "forget" all the problems of the older games and deny they ever existed, or even STILL exist in some cases.

I just wish I could understand how people could be so illogical.

on a side note, a lot of people hate BF and CoD just because they are popular, so there is that too.

Because less than 5% of the people who buy the game visit the forums, the people who ***** and moan? Most of the time no one cares about them...

I know right, I mean, if there was some important commercial holiday coming up that involved increased spending over an entire two months, then it'd make sense why games would be coming out in time for such an event.

Naw, makes no sense at all.

Totally misread the title as What I fail to understand about all the big titties coming out this season.. My reaction was a very loud, "WHAT DON'T YOU FUCKING UNDERSTAND!" But then I reread it.

Trust me, OP - you are not blind to what good games are. Gamers are just the most unruly bunch of douchbags to exist these days.
I read it as that too.

OT: Yeah, well some people are never happy, and if you admit to liking anything you are instantly a fanboy. Meh, internets, you so silly.

When someone likes a game, they are more apt to just keep playing the game. When they hate it, they have more time to complain on the internet. You have the opportunity to be a lot louder when you don't like something, too. Also, with a popular game, its a lot cooler to hate something then it is to like.

I think I can speak to BF3 although it is one of my favorite games for 2011.

It isn't just BF2 with prettier graphics (Because games should never evolve. X-Com still shouldn't be a shooter though. You have to stay true to the overall feel of the game, which BF3).

Squads are limited to four (A fair critisism and one I would like to see rectified in a future patch but not a deal-breaker for me).

There is no Commander (In my experience, outside of tournaments, almost no-one listened to anything the Commander said).

The maps are too small (Sort of true, however the tighter more infantry based maps are still a hell of a lot of fun).

Consoles were considered at some time during development (Well everyone knows that even thinking about consoles makes everything suck).

The singleplayer campaign was a waste of resources (I have to agree there, the story for Bad Company 2 was better, and it wasn't great. If the singleplayer had given the player full control of all the vehicles in the game as an extended tutorial it would have been worth while, but QTEs and on rail sections scream "I SUCK". Then again I didn't buy BF3 for the singleplayer and you are silly if you did).

Those are what I see as the major issues that seem to come up for BF3. Still the best AAA title I've played this year.

Because it would seem that, on the web, venting frustration is a more compulsive need than sharing positives.

As far as I'm concerned, you made some good choices. Battlefield 3 is a great online game sure to give you countless hours of play time, and both skyrim and saints row are open world games which will also give you countless hours of fun. Stop listening to people and just play your games.

Now if you excuse me, Serious Sam 3 awaits.
