I'd like to talk about my view of World of Warcraft. It has come to my attention that Blizzard has not produced a true Warcraft sequel since the launch of WoW in 2004. By a true sequel, I mean the down and gritty RTS style game that Warcraft once was. And yet, when I began to think on it, I realized that WoW is the sequel. It could even be the greatest sequel to a game ever made!
The fact of the matter is that World of Warcraft is played by millions around the world. There isn't a point in time that WoW isn't being played by someone, ever, and that includes during the Patches (every tuesday, the game goes down for 6 hours to reset the world). Not all the world servers go down at the same time, making WoW a true virtual world.
But what makes it better then other MMOs? Why is it that it's still the top MMO on the net?
Well, I believe it's because of it's amazing story. Even before WoW was launched, the veritable world of Warcraft already had three RTS games to it's name, a table-top RPG, and many novels. The addition of WoW just gave the story creators even more to build on! Instead of releasing a new game every couple of years depicting new quest and new characters, the developers gave writers the chance to include new dungeons, new quests, new heroes and villains, and best of all, new areas to explore, every couple of months! So comming back on point, the reason the story is incredible in WoW and why it hasn't lost it's gamers yet is because of the immense Lore behind the entire game. We easily have lore of comparable size to that of Lord of the Rings, if not in the same quality, but it comes very close.
Just as an example, take the story of Prince Arthas Menethil. His adventures started in 2002 with his ride through Azeroth to rid the world of the scourge, an undead legion only to become the leader of the undead himself as the Lich King. It took Blizzard 8 years to be able to impliment Arthas, as the Lich King. Not because it took that long to get everything ready, although it was a big part of the reason, but because we needed that time to build up the story to his ultimate demise. I myself have not killed him yet, but when I do, it will be the end of an amazing thrill ride.
The story in WoW is continually changing, morphing into something bigger and better as patches and expansions are released.
To sum it all up, WoW is still top not just because of it's amazing gameplay or superb story telling, but because it brought everything from past games and stories with it into an ever changing, interactive adventure. You can play through the game a thousand different times, and it won't ever be the exact same twice. Yes, it will be similar, but the way you go about doing things are always different.
Opinions highly appreciated.
