What if you were the only person who hated a popular game?

Alright, I'm going to go and say something controversial now. I hate the new Fallout.

I've been a fallout fan since the first game and fallout 3 was, in my opinion, the greatest in the franchise. But I've been trying to get into New Vegas, only to get frustrated again and again. There are so many design points that infuriate me, (perks every 2 levels, invisible walls, bad quest design) but I feel kind of alienated when telling people this. They blame me for not appreciating good gaming.

Now let me clarify, THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE BUGS! I know the game had glitches but my complaint is about the essential design of the game. It doesn't suit me, and I feel it could be better. I know it's a good game, but it is *my own opinion* that the game is not quite as good as what people were saying.

So I ask, what do you think? Am I simply being a dick or is it just that the game didn't suit well with my interests? How can I think a game like Fallout 3 was so amazing, yet deplore New Vegas, despite all evidence to the contrary?

Also, what other games do you hate that were supposed to be really good?

Well, I would tell myself:

"You are not the only one.

"You are NEVER the only one!

"Now go play something you enjoy and screw what everyone else thinks."

You can never be a jerk for not liking what most people like. If you didn't like something that most people like, the best thing you can do is to just let it go. Or in other words, to not give a shit.

I have never played New Vegas, have played Fallout 3, loved it, and from what I have heard about New Vegas since its release, I don't think it will be as good. So I never got it. I don't really have much money to spend on games anyway.

Trust me, you are not a dick. The overall design of the game is making me hold off on getting it.

And, I hated Halo 3. Well, not hated, but didn't worship like everyone else though.
Yet I loved Reach.

Heh.

Flaming helmet from the Legendary Edition FTW.

It's your opinion. I hate Team Fortress 2, which makes me a redneck/idiot/dumbass-that-can't-appreciate-fine-games, so I know where you're coming from. If you're wondering why I don't like it, it's the same reason I prefer a movie like Inception or Tron: Legacy to Up! or Toy Story 3. I can't stand the kiddy art style.

I liked Fallout: New Vegas, although it's a bit too big for me. Big, open singleplayer games make me feel lonely.

Aw, I thought this was an actual question and not just another hate thread waiting to happen...

OT: No, it just means your not interested in that particular game for whatever reason. Everyone has a game like that somewhere.

To each their own. That's all I really have to say.

I personally can't stand the Left 4 Dead series and people give me shit for that.

Well, I'm not exactly a hardcore Black Ops fan! Don't get me wrong, it's a great game. But I'm just not a hardcore COD fan. Honestly, I got it for Christmas, but I could've waited a little longer. It definitely wasn't my number one on the list.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great game! I'm just not a hardcore fan. I play other games equally, if not more.

The thing that annoys me most is how narrow-minded COD fans can be. :/ I know someone at my school who said Brotherhood sucked, because he beat the campaign really fast. I beat him into the ground (not literally) telling him how it wasn't about campaign, just the multiplayer. And it wasn't supposed to be a huge installment in the game series. Just... an installment.

After telling him this, he couldn't admit he was wrong, so all he did was shake his head and say how Assassin's Creed sucks. So every time he mentions it I say "Excuse me for playing games OTHER than Black Ops.".

People suck. :|

WHAT!? But EVERYBODY enjoys the new Fallout! YOU MUST BE PURGED, LIKE THE VILE SICKNESS THAT YOU ARE!

/sarcasm

I'm actually with you on that, OP. For all the praise they received, I haven't enjoyed one of Nintendos' releases in an age, and actually find myself categorizing them as "must-avoid" games on occasion.

It's your opinion, and that's what matters.

I've never actually played New Vegas, so I have no idea, but even if I did it still doesn't matter. As I've said before, there is no written law in the universe that states that everyone has to like the same thing.

It sucks though when everyone tells you your wrong though. :/

Still, you're entitled to think what you want about it, just like they are.

I just deal with it and chuckle to myself when the fanboys start exploding about any possibility of an FFVII remake.

THE INVISIBLE WALLS! Oh my god yes! I hate how my creativity is rewarded with a dick-slap like that! "No, you can't go this way because fuck you." At least Fallout 3 had the decency to say "No, you can't go that way, look, there's a rebar jungle at least 3 feet deep that way, what are you, stupid? Go around." Whereas with FNV I can go to third person and see my character standing there on the edge of the cliff, and he should be able to go around, but he can't, because BLAH. Also, on the final quest (not really any spoilers, it takes place inside the Hoover Dam), I was supposed to find something, activate it, and continue on, but after going through four huge open rooms that all looked the same with endlessly respawning enemies, I just got tired and shut the damn console off. It was insulting. I understand they have to give it a feeling of "bigness", but couldn't they just please make it a bit more varied, other than more generators and concrete?
And there's the retarded Deathclaw valley that makes you not be able to go straight north to New Vegas at the beginning of the game. Now at first, I thought "Oh that's cool, some actual non-scaling stuff. I'll come back and clear this place out when I'm tougher." Nope. An anti-materiel rifle and .50 cal armor piercing rounds be damned, those Deathclaws are bulletproof and have near immortal amounts of health. I didn't have the patience to try and start over and take an explosives tag skill to see if that would make any difference.
And the CHARACTERS! Sure, Bethesda has always been kind of bland-ish when it comes to characters, but at least Fallout 3 had some damn PASSIONATE actors! When the raider said "YOU'RE GONNA DIE! AHAHAHA!" he sounded legitimate about it! When I punched Liam Neeson (AKA Dad) in the crotch and he said "What in god's name is wrong with you?!" I felt shame! But in FNV, they all sound... dispassionate! Uncaring! It's INFURIATING! I just want to beat a copy of the game over the developers head and yell "HOW COULD YOU FUCK THIS UP?!"

On another note, I thought Mass Effect 2 was too dumbed down. Only five skills, six if I beat the game? Fuck off! And no inventory to manage? Come on, I like hauling around massive amounts of gear! No infinite ammo? More cover based shooting? FUCK!!! Mass Effect challenged ideas that were set in place with the whole cover-based thing, and they pissed it away with ME2! The story was good, yes, and I loved the characters, but the scenery! No more planet exploring? NO MORE CITADEL EXPLORING?! FUUUUUCK! I want to go dance at Chora's Den! I want to go hack the vending machines at Flux! I want to peruse the market listening to people! But no. I get three floors and one floor on the presidium, and one generic cover-based combat level. It just... disappointed me in so many ways.

Wow, I get way too worked up about these things! Blimey... NERD ALERT!

I hate Fallout 3 and love New Vegas. It happens.

Side note to some people in the thread (you know who you are):

"Am I the only one"
It's a hyperbole

Hyperbole:
"noun Rhetoric .
1.
obvious and intentional exaggeration.
2.
an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally, as ?to wait an eternity.?

No one who says "am I the only one" really believes they are the only one. So stop freaking out about the expression. Or are we suddenly living in a world where people only speak in the absolute most literal terms?

Well, in all fairness, I guess I don't care if you hate a game that I like. I don't like Halo and you don't see a million Halo fans being self-righteous about it to me. So really, I will just ask - for conversation's sake - what don't you actually like about it? I have legendary rants about what I don't like about Final Fantasy 8, so I imagine you can give me some specifics.

Well, If I was the only one, than I'd probably kill myself because I would have lost every single drop of faith I have in humanity... Or I may just never mention my dislike to anyone and move on and play something I like.

Oh and I also hated Fallout 3 as well. I found it lacking choice and being generally dull.

OK well, I would first like to make a couple of clarifying statements.

1. I do NOT think that FNV is a bad game. I recognize the good parts of it's design, and is still fairly good. I just believe that several design flaws in specific parts ruined my experience.

2. This is NOT a hate thread. I am simply interested in other peoples bad experiences with popular games.

Now, as to what I specifically do not like? As Pandaman so wonderfully stated, the poorly placed invisible walls are very annoying. Just trying to get to ranger station foxtrot made me rage quit several times. I mean, I know there is a road around, but why can't I go over the mountains? It's just frustrating, navigating around giant rocks, mobbed by dozens of Cazadores, only to find that I can't go that way.

Secondly, small design changes that obsidian implemented to bring the game closer to the old fallout 2 than fallout 3. One example is the perk changes. They are only every two levels now. Which, admittedly I can deal with, but it gets worse when I find that all my favorite perks have been either debuffed, (grim reaper sprint) removed, (almost perfect) or given ridiculous prerequisites. (Sniper (at least I think that's what it's called)) I play a combat class, and accept the penalties that come from a lack of skills and everything pumped into strength, endurance, guns, repair and medicine. But all my old perks have skill requirements. Sniper requires 7 agility? YOU'RE STANDING- NO! LYING DOWN, NOT ACTUALLY MOVING!!! How does that make sense?Sorry...

The quests had poor designs and flaws. Eg. the fact that I am locked out of most quests. If you offside the Legion you can't do their quests, but worse, I can't finish 'The house always wins' because I can't talk to Caesar or get the chip! I am literally forced to do the NCR quest line. And then, I have to go get the Great Khans on my side? Can't do that. COS I NEED TO GO TO THE FORT AND TALK TO CAESAR!!! In the end I had to kill papa khan just to continue. And now, It tells me that I have to take out the BoS, and there is no peaceful option cos I made Hardin elder back at the start of the game. Put simply, I'm frustrated that so many quests are locked out or forced into undesirable situations simply because of some random action I made ages ago. It frustrates me.

Lastly is the fact that I feel like i'm being punished for playing combat-oriented. I have always picked combat in RPG's, and accept that means more enemies and no shortcuts. I'm fine with that, In Fallout 3, even though I was blasting through hordes of enemies, it still felt like a legitimate method of progressing. In NV, there are always doors and computers and what nots that need opening and I can't do it. In several quests I am forced into bad endings. Eg. Cassidy's side quest, I had to kill everyone because I couldn't get to the evidence needed. I wanted to do it peacefully and get Cass the good perk, but no. I had no choice but to kill everyone. Which I don't like. I AM HIGHLY ADVERSE TO MASSACRING PEOPLE!!!

Personally, I hated Fallout 3 and loved New Vegas by that just me.

Also, really don't like the Elder Scrolls series. Never got into it personally. Different reasons for each game. Oblivion just got repetitive, and with Morrowind I just really had no idea what to do.
