What is "badass"

The word "badass" gets thrown around a lot, but I don't know that I've ever heard a firm definition for it. It's always been one of those things that I just know it when I see it, but I don't know how to really explain it.

What say you, Escapists? How would you define the term "badass"? If it helps discussion, go ahead and throw out some prime examples of badasses and let the rest of us know why you consider them to be such a badass.

Someone who's a hard-headed that goes around fighting when he doesn't really need to, but does anyway because its cool.

Of course there are other ways you could be badass. I guess if you want the generelist(is that even a word?) of generalizations, its a guy who pwns people.

Generally, a badass is usually a person that not only does things well, they do them so well that simply calling it awesome would not be enough.

I would say this would have the best distinction of what badass is versus cool or awesome, etc. Though as implied be prepared to have a significant amount of time eaten up reading the page along with other ones linked from it.

A term that describes a person or action, that's negative effects or short comings are outweighed by the amazement of the action or person in question.

I.E. Gurren Lagann. Punching something so hard it shot outside of the space time continuum is unrealistic and scientifically impossible. Impossibilities and large fabrications break immersion, but the feat itself tied with the story was such an amazing feat, that is makes the viewer forget the fact it's otherwise impossible.

Another example could be sandbox games where you run around murdering people, and do something crazy like crash a jet into an innocent old lady. Morally murder is generally wrong, and game wise you could be continuing with the plot, the idea is so preposterous that the negative side effects are almost completely forgotten.

A Badass is just basically someone who does something that is difficult or thought impossible to do despite the odds with maximum awesome.

A plus if he has no regrets.

It's a little hard to explain...

Imagine there's an oppressive group in power, and they're enforcing their will on someone weaker when someone else from the weaker group casually walks in and eliminates all of them and then puts on shades before he leaves casually. That's badass.

Badass is getting you leg cut off at the lumber mill, going to the bar that night, fighting 12 people and beating them up with your severed leg. Reattach your leg back on with the thread from their clothes. Than get the chick.
