I'm not trying to be mean, cruel, biased, or indirectly poke at any Canadian's out there.

I work in South Korea as an English Teacher, where we also discuss Western culture and various English speaking cultures all over the world. For the holidays we started discussing traditional foods and unique cultural fare, when one of my adorable students asked about "Canadian food." "What...is....food....Canada?" I knew what he meant, but I was stumped. I'm American, with a little knowledge and research on some of the other English Speaking countries, but alas, my Northern Cousins have been left out on this particular lesson.

I promised I'd be able to answer them the next time they asked, which may or may not happen, but I am curious, what is uniquely Canadian fare? Is it like American, (I know we share a lot of folk-arts, symbols, and other things in common) or is there a unique flavor that is all Canadian?

Respectfully,

Xanian

I don't know. I'm there now, and we went to a restaurant called Swiss Chalet which claimed that Canada was famous for its chicken. That's all i got.

I was wondering this same thing the other day. In my GPS there is a category to search for restaurants that serve Canadian food. I couldn't find any.

Bacon & maple syrup?

Never been, and know no one from there, so that's most likely way off.

We have poutine (fries, gravy and cheese,) and syrup. Canada doesn't really have much food. We tend to eat the food cultures bring into Canada.

Anything with maple syrup on it.

Got yourself some curry there? Poured some maple syrup on it have you? Well, congrats, you're eating a Canadian dish.

I'm joking, but there was this Chinese food place in Thunder Bay that had the best soup.

Maple Syrup and BEAR STEAKS.

I wouldn't have a clue, I'm Australian, I have met very few Canadian people and one of which was owned a bear hunting reserve in Saskatuan.

Poutine, Jig's dinner. I'm a Newfie and there is a lot of Newfie food, which is Canadian, so that. And poutine.
NEWFIE LASAGNA!

Soak 3 packets of Kraft Dinner noodles, chop 1/2lbs of baloney into little squares, dump together into a casserole dish, bake until done, layer processed cheese slices on top, serves 4-6.

NEWFIE ROAST BEEF!

Take 1 full sized (unsliced) log of baloney, poke with fork, roast in oven. NOMNOMNOMNOM.

There's also poutine (french fries with gravy and mozzarella curds), beaver-tails (scone-like pastries slathered in butter and brown sugar), Calgary Red-Eyes (beer+clamato, which I'm NOT fond of), and Canadian Rye Whiskey! I've got a book called 'Weird Canadian Words', and it's got a couple things in it that are somewhat strange regional dishes; I'll make sure to post them tomorrow. In fact, if I remember, I'll include the ISDN number for the book, so the OP can potentially order it, for a reference book for the students.

And for the record, I'm not a Newfie, but I know why I can't get a blowjob in Newfoundland... all them cocksuckers is here in Alberta!

*runs off giggling*
[small](Disclaimer: No actual offense to Newfies intended; I work with too many to get them angry.)[/small]

*EDIT*

Saskatechewan, or Saskatoon? The first is the province, the other is a major town there.
