That makes people feel that they can throw spelling and grammar out the window?
And use numbers for letters?

The people I chat with don't do that. I'm glad, as it makes it so much harder to understand them if they did.

Ask the people you are chatting with to not do that any more.

Because it's faster? Just get better friends who prefer to use proper grammar.

Just because it's quicker.

Some people can't type as fast so they just shorten words down to "C U LATR" instead of "See you later"

It's a convenience thing really.

Now if someone just has horrid grammar and spelling because their brain can't function properly, that just means they're stupid.

Pure laziness for the most part. It appears to be the evolution of the English language. Alot of people in this generation simply don't care.

I can accept spelling or grammar errors, everyone slips up from time to time. I can also understand people with English as a second language making mistakes and I don't get angry about it. But arrogant, lazy fucking native English speakers who "tlk lyk dis m8, r u cummin out l8r? c u then xoxox" actually make my blood boil.

I only do either when pressed for space in SMS. If I hit my character limit and haven't finished a thought, it's time to go back through and get "creative" wherever possible to buy a handful of precious extra characters.

Or, if I throw that kind of stuff out there on a forum, it's purely just trying to be rather facetious for fun.

Because it's quicker. When texting, I understand it because not everyone has a keyboard on their phone. With IMing/chatting though, there really is no excuse. I don't mind some shorthand or minor errors, but an excess of shorthand and mistakes is just inexcusable. I'm usually pretty good at understanding really bad grammar/spelling, and even THEN I can't understand what these people are typing. It annoys me greatly.

It's quicker and more informal. It's not like this is new or anything. Roman graffiti in Pompeii was riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes, and one of the main reasons we know how ancient Greek was pronounced is because of spelling mistakes.

Laziness, and a whole generation of kids being brought up by parents that are too busy trying to be kids themselves, that a whole lot of importance isn't put on things like grammar and the importance of language.

It's not just our language that's being murdered, it's our future. I see kids left to their own devices in public so much, I'm like 90% sure my kids will be able to take over the world, as I plan to educate them properly, instead of letting them be free-range retards.

texting it makes a lot of sense.. it's a lot easier to say:

ru dere

then

"Hey brendan, are you there man?"

online chatting, it's just the proliferation of shorthands, like lol, wtf etc (not etc though)

I don't have a problem with it as long as it seems appropriate to the conversation

that's ridiculous. English has been evolving almost non-stop for the past 700 years or so.. The future of the language has acronyms. That's just how it works. You can sit there like an 80 year old guy complaining about kids today and their hip hops and scotchmabops, but it just seems silly. 100 years ago there was some old guy saying the EXACT same thing about the way you speak.

It's just faster, although I always make sure I use as good spelling and grammar as I can, even in texting.

With texting it's easy to understand. Some people don't have keyboards, other times there are space constraints (Limited number of letters per text, limited texts available).

With Instant messaging it's just stupid.

I don't really care about whether or not it makes sense or spelling. It's a freaking chatroom, what do you expect? Hell I just try and type faster in chatrooms. But over here? Grammar Nazi time!

With texting you only have a certain amount of letters you can put in a single text, and if your not on contract you tend to limit your words to fit the text to not waste credit.

As for online chatting there is no excuse!

To be honest, I only follow perfect grammer when i'm in class. I dislike rigit systems, although, heh, I get annoyed when I see people misuse there, their, and they're. Ironic considering how awful my own writing really is.

I thought that started because, originally, the longer the text message was, the more it cost?
Then again, I don't really text, so I dunno if that's true or if my memory just made that up. *shrugs*

I only do it when texting if I'm in a huge hurry. But otherwise, me, and everyone I talk to, seem to still use as close to proper grammar as we can.
