Thats seems to be the only sort of game that is being played right now. It seems to be very popular and that might be why that seems to be the only game coming out right now.
Now im not saying they are bad, but there do seem to be a lot of games like this. There are other types of games. Most men and some women are currently hooked on like call of duty and there is even a new one coming out in November, i think.
First person shooters like 'Borderlands', 'Resistance 2', 'Call of duty', 'Bioshock', 'Brothers in Arms', 'Delta Force', 'Doom', and 'Red steel'. (Just a tiny few)
What makes them so entertaining?
Whats your favourite and why?

They are easy to pick up and play and they are mainstream. And they sell like crazy and are extremely popular which makes other publishers want to get a bit of the Call of Duty cake.

Still, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the best war-FPS I've played to date. Love it thoroghly.

Borderlands, Bioshock, and Doom are really different type of shooters. Borderlands/Doom can fall in the same category of 'mindless' shooter, but it's highly immersive. Borderlands with its cruel little world infested with hilarious little characters and the mindless fun that comes from diablo hack&slash&loot system is great and well done. + Like Lordmarkus said, it's easy to get into.

Bioshock was more well story-focused, and you can't say at all that it was an average game, it's probably ahead of Doom/Borderlands on the 'list' with its great mix of shooting, rpg and story-driven stuff.

My favorite so far has to be Borderlands, because it makes me happy. :)

I like your answer :)
There are a lot of people hooked on call of duty 4. Is it just because you can play online with other characters and talk to people and thats why they are hooked on it? Shouldnt have a game have a mixture of things?

Exactly how does anyone come to the conclusion that only Call of Duty-esque games are being played now?

Beyond Call of Duty, Medal of Honor and Battlefield (You know, the franchises that are supposed to be semi-realistic shooters), I have to think hard to come up with other games recently released that follow that formula.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but are the games in your post supposed to be games that follow the Call of Duty formula?

If so, then you fail. Hard. Because claiming that games like Borderlands, Bioshock or Red Steel are following the Call of Duty formula is stupid.

I've seen my brother play Borderlands and i can see why you like it.
So to make a good first person shooter is mostly the story line and how how its all presented. I guess first person shooter would also get people more into the game because its like they are sort of there (in a way) :)

Really? A lot of people I know really love that game. I thought I was in the minority as someone who really doesn't like it, or any Call of Duty game.

OT: Yeah, a lot of those online FPS' are being made but there are also lots of good RPGs and some other titles coming out as well like Deus Ex Human Revolution, LittleBigPlanet 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Portal 2, Dragon Age 2, and Fable 3 to name a few. (Ok I don't know for sure that any of these games are going to be good but outlook is pretty good)

Its good to know that people are also working on other types of games. Im just sick of seeing first person shooter games and would like a different game to play :) There are some really good names in that list, cant wait for something different :)

Well then this thread makes less and less sense by the minute.

Why start of with a claim that people only play games like Call of Duty and then list games that are nothing like Call of Duty beyond sharing the same genre?

Is this thread about FPS games? If so, then the first few sentences are pointless and only obstruct the true purpose of the thread. Is this a thread about Online gaming? If so, it makes no sense to call out games like Doom, Delta Force and Red Steel. Is this about modern games all being FPS games? If so, then listing Doom and Delta Force, games that came out in the 90s, makes no sense.

Resistance 2 is one of those games that tried to be like CoD a bit and it was worse off for it.

And Brothers In Arms has barely similarities to Call of Duty when it comes to gameplay. It comes closer to Rainbow Six than CoD

People pretend to hate it because everyone likes it. That is all. I call it "300 Syndrome"

FPS are always good because they give you a direct view of the world and are usually the most action based. They are also the best games for immersion because we see it through the characters eyes, literally. They are mainstream because they are popular, not popular because they are mainstream.

He's probably a little kid or has english as a second language, go easy. The thread is about FPS's and you'd have to know this. The 3 main points are:

1) Why are FPS's so popular?
2) What makes people like them so much?
3) What's your favourite and why?

Simple.

Wait, so you're saying that there are too many FPS games in the Multiplayer market? Are you new to the concept of gaming? First Person shooters are very popular, yes. They have a lot of people that play them online, yes. They are by no means dominating the market.

Games released in the last 2 months that aren't FPS games:

1. Starcraft 2
2. Madden NFL 11
3. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
4. Transformers: War for Cybertron
5. Alpha Protocol
6. BlazBlue: Continuum Shift

Games coming out in the next 2 months that aren't FPS games:

1. Mafia 2
2. Kane and Lynch 2
3. Dead Rising 2
4. Metroid: Other M
5. Civilization 5
6. Two Worlds 2
7. Pokemon Black and White

I mean seriously, you can completely ignore FPS games and have a whole plethora of great games. Why complain about or even comment on a genre if you don't like it?

Everyone I know who plays games is playing Starcraft 2. Completely different game.

Rash generalisations are never good.

Anyway, they're popular because they are easy to get into, immersive, a little bit of an adrenaline rush and like lots of games CoD offers rewards for continued multiplayer play.

Personally, of the FPS market, I last played Singularity which is a dark horse and was quite a fun game. Of the CoD style games I prefer Bad Company 2 for multiplayer... just seems much more well, realistic I guess.
