bad news... I heard that EVERYTHING is dying, I mean everything

Consoles
PC's
Iphones
TV's
Movies
Books
your car
your dog

its all in decline

ok but seriously, why is it people like to freak out about gaming now and again? is it becase we are all just analyzing the industry all the time?

so I guess the question here is do you buy into the all the doom mongering? do you belive some of it? have you ever been proven wrong in the past?

I mean you dont get people anouncing the decline of cinema or TV every month or so...

so what makes our chosen industry of entertainment so special in regards to its fragility? (is that even a word?...I think)

This about that "Gaming is dying" thread? Yeah, we are a reactionary sort. Quite funny, really.

The Chicken Little's of the world like to complain I guess. Let them think the sky is falling.

Age might have something to do with it. I hear younger people like to be more dramatic sometimes.
That's because younger people are stupid and have no creativity, so they intentionally create drama to give the impression that their lives are somehow interesting.

That's my theory anyways. (I'm 19, btw.)

I've been thinking this too. You'd think, wouldn't you, with the gaming industry being bigger, richer and more widely accepted as a legitimate part of culture than it has ever been before, people might be, y'know, cheerful. Or at least optimistic.

Nostalgia. That would be my guess, since they're growing up, they attribute the things they love as they grow up to be vanishing.

Well, it has heavy nostalgia, being the first big-time three-dimensional FPS. Yeah, brief experiments in the genre prior to Wolf 3-D, and Wolf itself, I know, but Doom was the first to really bring it all home in a major way. Especially in the field of experimenting with different weapons, different enemies, and levels which incorporated the Z-axis in a major way. Plus, there was deathmatching and co-op, especially online...

...oh. People do that. The best policy is to let the naysayers run rampant and just ignore it. You can try to talk sense into them, but most of the time it won't stick and engaging them further just gives them a sense of justification they really don't deserve.

I don't get it either. It's all very chicken little.

Gaming jumped the freaking shark somewhere in 1998. It's not going anywhere. That's like saying books are in a decline.

That's what I think too. Those rosy glasses are powerful. In addition to that, games are naturally going to get less complex as, technologically, they get more complex, there is no way around that, so I can sort of see where some complaints are coming from. However, some people take their worry too far.

People are melodramatic. Everything's so much more intense if everything is going horribly wrong, or some rubbish like that.

People don't know the future. People are afraid of what they don't know. So people invent the future, because a bad one is better then a mysterious one.
Just look at dragons, sea monsters, the edge of the world, and the end of the world.

Rather than directly answering the OP, I'll just post my reply from the last "DOOOOOOOOOOOM" thread.

Oh, do so ever shut up. Look, I don't want this to seem more inflammatory than it is, but I'm getting really sick of these "WE'RE DOOOOOOOMED! DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMEDDD!!" Threads. Gaming is not dying. It's changing, sure; and we can't know yet whether the change will ultimately be good or bad. That's beside the point, though. The point is that this kind of thread is no better than this tripe http://www.ebiblefellowship.com/outreach/tracts/may21/ so knock it off.

I think it adequately expresses my feelings on the matter.
