what is the best game you have played all year?

No doubt in my mind that Rayman Origins is the best game I have played this year. I thought that Batman: Arkhyam City was going to be difficult to beat, then came Uncharted 3 then Rayman Origins came out of nowhere and blew my mind with it's fantastic art direction and addictive gameplay. I'm also the biggest sucker for platformers in the universe.

If you're referring to games that came out this year, definitely Dark Souls. Played the hell out of that game, and for the most part loved every minute of it. Just as good as Demon's Souls was.

As far as games that have been out before this year but I played them for the first time this year, I played Shadow of the Colossus for the first time on the Ico/SotC HD Collection on the PS3. The game was amazing.

Man, I dunno. It was a pretty awesome year. Arkham City, Dead Space 2, Portal 2, Dark Souls, Uncharted 3, and Catherine all made me go "BEST GAME EVER" at some point. Also, though I don't think it was THAT great, I've already put a ton of time into MW3.

I'm gonna go with Dark Souls. I loved the heck out of all the games above, but I think it was just the more rewarding experience.

The best game I played this year? Psychonauts (got it last week). No game I played comes even close to that (Big AAA titles: Alice: MR, WH40k: Space Marine, TES V: Skyrim, Deus Ex: HR, Portal 2, Saints Row 3, played several of the modern FPS on my brothers console).

You sir, have excellent taste.

OT: Yeah, I have to go with Psychonauts too. As for games that actually came out this year, it's a difficult one. Uni work has made me miss a lot of big releases, but I think the one I did manage to pick up that I liked most was Gears of War 3. I enjoyed the campaign, it wrapped everything up quite nicely, and it was the multiplayer that got me back into online multiplayer.

Skyrim is in my top list, but it isn't at the top, that honor belongs to Battlefield 3. The multiplayer has kept me entertained far longer than most other games I've played this year. The campaign is a bit of a snore, but that's a minor gripe when you don't really give two fucks about the story about a one man special forces unit.

1: I just got Rayman Origins for christmas. LOVING it so far...

2: OT: Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword. Great puzzles and boss battles, fun combat, fun weapons and an interesting story. Replaying it now on Hero Mode, and been enjoying it just as much.

Runner-ups include: Deus Ex, Saint's Row 3, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and Arkham City.

Is this topic strictly about games released this year? Or do older games that we simply discovered this year count? Because, despite what everyone else claims, I haven't found this year to be particularly good.(in terms of games)

Best game released this year? I want to say Catharine, because it was a truly unique and innovative game. But, I didn't really enjoy it all that much. So, I guess Skyrim.

Off the top of my head, i would say Dark Souls. that game made me its ***** and i loved every moment. and i hadnt even heard of the series until a few days before its release, so it caught me by surprise. Never did finish it though, i must at some point.

....Then i realize that Shogun 2 came out this year, and that is hands down the best game i have ever played. i hit 600 hours last night and im still excited to play it, and i even saw an execution animation ive never seen before.

(meanwhile, in another part of my bedroom, a copy of The Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim slowly gathers dust....)

While it's a close tie between Portal 2 and Bulletstorm, I'd have to pick Portal 2. No other game brought me so much joy in the 8-10 hour long campaign. Skyrim is my third favorite, however.

Not a new game, but "Vampire teh Masquerade: Bloodlines"...with a fair few mods and updates to get the thing working and jazzed up, though.
