I just have to say this:

[HEADING=2]STOP IT[/HEADING] with the false assumptions that these things are even remotely mainstream in Japan, or in Japanese gaming, or that they reflect anything on mainstream Japanese culture. It's just getting ridiculous.

THEY DON'T.

Nobody here will likely believe me because they haven't been here for longer than a week or so, and probably spent the majority of their time in Akihabara, the one place in Japan that could be considered "geek Mecca", where these kinds of things are flaunted in every store window. Akihabara is one ward of Tokyo. That's it. If you were to take just about anything like this to another area of Japan and show it off openly, as if it were some mainstream thing, you would probably be socially ostracized and likely laughed out of the country. I keep repeating this, but I have to in order for it to get into people's heads. The truth is that really, the only thing we Westerners get from Japan that geeks love so much that is really mainstream here, that people past the age of 15 spend time with, is manga. Primarily, just like in the West, anime and video games are viewed by the majority as kids' toys. Those adults that play video games are considered otaku, (which is as bad as a "4-letter word" in this context) and, as mentioned before, socially ostracized. *More specific references snipped* Meanwhile, the rest of Japan moves on like any other modern industrialized culture.

Stop passing judgment on an entire nation by the actions of its social outcasts. And why is it only Japan you guys tend to do this to? Shall I do the same for Europe? I spent three and a half months there. How would you guys like that?

Call me a weeaboo if you want. But seriously, I can't stand them because they just perpetuate this false idea of Japan because the vast majority of them haven't been here either, and those that have also probably spent their time in Akihabara or in the manga shops all day. What's worse, is that a good number of them actually like this stuff.

EDIT: P.S. Don't go to Sankaku expecting an accurate picture of Japan at all either. But that should be a given.

Hentai's pretty weird to me... but no less weird than all the crazy stuff that is on American TV. Japan isn't really so strange when you really get down to it. Every nation has their bizarre madness going on that people in those countries would prefer to pretend do not exist. I'm sure all of us can think of some wild stuff from our own countries that we would wish did not come from our nations, right?

Japan does not have a monopoly on "strange stuff" is all I'm trying to say. :3

No, I don't think YOU get it. Nowhere in these threads is the direct assumption made that all of Japan is like this all the time. By no means does ANYBODY with half a brain think that Japan is the only country capable of putting out random and disturbing shit. YouTube Poop is a very good testament to that.

The only reason we take such an interest in the weird stuff Japan puts out is because it's so unfamiliar--it's a whole new flavor of weird most of us have never seen before. It's like watching porn for the first time; strange things you didn't even realize were possible unfolding right before your eyes.

The problem I have with it is that not everybody sees it the way you do. There are plenty of people out there who don't grasp that this is not the way Japan is all the time. I see it all too often in some people I know who wish they could come here, or I get asked by friends outside the country about the latest stupid thing they saw and going, "You live THERE now?" It does have an effect on people, maybe not on you, but on others, yes it does. And perhaps I should clarify that I am not saying we can't have a good laugh at the insanity, but with other things, we simply say, "that was weird". With Japanese things, people seem to say "that was weird... Japan is so weird." Why is it that with Japan you link the weird stuff to the country's culture, while with other things you don't? That's the question I have.
