They do it because it's easy to be a dick head through the internet as no one knows who they are.

personally, im impressed a troll even had the guts to say something to your face! lol thats freakin RARE! ...now grow yourself a pair of boobs like me and they'll leave you alone in real life as they'll be too scared to even make eyecontact lol... however its a trade off as you'll get more insults and trolling online "make me a sammich dyke" and such... if i stopped playing games simply because i was hounded by morons i would be playing my old NES and staying away from modern consoles.. its bad out there.. so many jerks!
try not to let it get to you.. these kids have obvious issues (maybe mommy doesnt love them and maybe daddy touched them.. who knows, but now they have rage issues) remeber they will never know the warm touch of a woman and just try to play with your own friends to avoid the trolls.

From my experience with MH Tri, its really hit and miss. A lot of the problem is that most of the people online for Tri are 1st time players of the Monster Hunter games. I understand that it isn't always the case, but they believe that they do not need people and are trying to prove that they have the biggest ego. As a person who has played all of the MH released in the US, I have to say that online gamers, generally and I am aware there are many exceptions especially with the MW2 crowd, do not fully understand the fact that you have to work as a unit and work towards a common goal. But, I have run into quite a few people who will smack you around, be it on accident or on purpose, but it really isn't such a big deal as the only "friendly fire" are the explosives. Do not give up hope on a game just because you run into a few assholes who just live to troll and destroy the game because it is a community game and there are decent people who still play it.

This is why I only play online with people I already know, and mostly stick to single player.

People are pricks, nothing new.

and before you ask, no i wont play MH with you. im never playing it again
Just try saying, "I game on a mac and am happy with how things are for me."
I get tons of hate for liking my Macbook, but really, it all boils down to:
"You don't think how I think. You should think the way I think because: *insert reasons of varying rationality*. I don't care about your being happy with what you think, and I don't care that you haven't been insulting or encroaching on my beliefs. You're WRONG. I'm now going to insult you, your opinions, and your being happy with what you have because you're different from me."

Its primitive tribal instinct that just proves the perpetrator is narrow-minded and likely very insecure about their own being.
Very well said. And sadly, confirming my own experiences, as I have seen that exact line of "reasoning" time and time again in all forms of online conversation (and more disturbingly, recently swapping over to real life more frequently as well).

Oh, and the "I game on a mac and am happy with how things are for me" part? I can totally relate to that, that sounds sooo familiar :)

i decided to trade it in to gamestop, there some jackass who was shopping there goes "you cant trade that in, you just didnt like it because you suck at all games. where do you live? im gonna break them all to make sure i dont play with you online."
Did someone really do this to you? I must admit I have a hard time believing it, but if it is true, I wish I could have been there. I would have shut that person up. If I had been the Game Stop Employee, I would have told that person to get out of my store, then called the police saying someone was threatening my customers. That is unacceptable.

Well, I'm not sure what all, of even many of the reasons behind it may be, but one that I think plays a significant role would be anonymity. Most times, especially within online gameplay, there isn't much punishment or consequence for trolling others, or cheating.

It's become more apparent these days, but even so, sounds like you've had a rough while with your online gaming relationship. Sorry. :/

I'm not trying to be mean but maybe you are actually bad. In a competitive game, nothing is worse than an incompetent team member. It really does irk you, you're doing your best, trying to win and some idiot who hasn't bothered to do some background reading screws it all up for you.

Especially with Monster Hunter, there are a lot of devoted fans out there who have put in a few hundred hours on the previous titles. From my experience playing, it's a hard game you have to be damn good at and I wouldn't expect any less of my team.

I don't rage when I do play online, but I do get annoyed at stupid team members. Gamestop guy did sound like a dick though.
but i never got a chance to even help with the mission, i was just told to follow them then they left me for dead. kinda hard to say i suck when im not even given a chance to show how much i suck or rule

You listed the reasons why I don't tend to play online games at all, single player is where it's at. This is unless I know who I'm playing with and as I have about 6 people as friends on the PSN and 2 on steam, I never do it often.

Oh and teabagers. If I catch you doing that, I'll kill you no matter whose team your on.
That made me laugh for some reason. Maybe because I was goofing around in Firefight matchmaking and as a gag I ran over to a fallen elite and dropped a T-bag on him (just to make fun of the practice since it wasn't a person on the other end, I was partied up with friends). Someone quickly put me in my place with an errant rocket to the backside. And lulz were had by all.

Griefers. Dicks. Fuckheads. They're around. Try not to let them get you down. Most gamers are perfectly sane, calm, polite individuals, like all our good friends on the Escapist forums. Don't let the bad apples spoil the whole barrel for you.

I'm surprised you haven't learned this lesson yet, given your age. People aren't nice. Unless you are very attractive, they're probably not going to do nice things for you unless it benefits them. And even if it would benefit them, they still won't. They're jerks. They don't like anybody because they don't like themselves. Don't take it personally. It's just an unfortunate fact of modern life. They use the internet as an outlet to vent their frustrations by tormenting others.

I wish it were different. But it's going to take a lot of coordination and turning-of-the-other-cheek to overcome and eradicate this type of behaviour.
