What is up with Ridge Racer?

I don't know anything about Ridge Racer. Could someone please explain to me what the issue with that game is?

Jack Tretton wanted to make a joke about it when Kazuo Hirai left the stage. What's all that about?

I think it goes back to E3 a few years ago when it looked like Sony had just writte up their E3 presentation the the breakfast napkin and half assed the whole thing. To present the PS1 collection on the PSP they played Ridge Racer and gave us this gem:

It's probably to do with this . It was pretty cringeworthy stuff, and fanboy wars fuel back in the day.

As for what Ridge Racer is? It's fucking awesome is what it is. A racing game from the PSX era.
