On nov 2, the supreme court will hear arguments concerning the california violent video game bill. That's not too far away from now. Soon, the violent video game case debate will heat up once again.

So, what is your argument? How will you justify your reasoning?

People should decide for themselves. Parents should decide for their children. It's the same as any other medium (and specifically film, because the parallels are pretty clear)

I could go on and on...

I would pretty much recite Moviebob's GameOverthinker episode on the video game violence matter.

Not say the exact same things mind you, but it would be very similar.

If games made kids violent, then why aren't kids today committing crimes? If games make kids violent, why are crime rates are low while game playing is high?

We have violent movies, TV shows, books, music, plays, operas, etc. Why not video games? They worry about kids getting into violent video games, well we have ratings meant to keep the young ones away from them. Just like we have ratings on all the aforementioned "acceptable" violent media, why aren't they making as much of a fuss about those things as well?

There is nothing in the second amendment limiting it to wielding weapons in the physical world. Second amendment could totally cover that!

Video games should get all the same protections and restrictions as any other media form. There's no substantive difference.

it's not a violence case, I thought
isn't it about games not being art, thus they should be censored

either way it needs to get shot down hard
they're rated for a reason

The argument that being younger than 18 removes one's sense of judgment in what to buy doesn't make much sense; also, for the few trumped-up ostensibly video game-related crimes, these people were really just violent sociopaths who, in all likelihood, would've done that with or without games.

Also, I defy anyone to say that Portal, SoTC, and Bioshock have no artistic merit.

This whole debacle is pretty similar to people railing against comics for promoting things like juvenile delinquency, but the medium of comics has produced some great works of literature (See Maus, Persepolis, etc.)

Whats to say that if they did ban "violent" videogames? Whats going to stop the kids from venting out their rage on eachother? Games can incourage violence, but the can also prevent it in real life! I know that when I sometimes feel the need to kick the crap out of something I go on a game (this is why I am looking forward to Dead Rising :D)

Most stores like Gamestop already have policies in place that if someone that is under 18 wants to buy an M rated game, their parent or leagle guardian has to be present to give the clerk permission to give the game to the child. With this in place, the only way a child will be negatively influenced by a gate is if their parent is irresponsible or if the store broke policy. Either way, it isn't the game maker's fault and they shouldn't be punished for it.

"Would you rather I chopped off someone's head in-game or did it on the street?" I mean, doing something like that is horrible, but still...

Failing that, this:

For those too lazy to follow the links, but know the comic, it's the court case guest starring Phoenix Wright.
