My friends and I are getting together tonight, and we've noticed a distinct lack of local multiplayer games over the past couple of years. Are there any gems we've been missing out on?

There's a lot of non-mainstream games that nail this and are a lot of fun as well. Pixeljunk Shooter and Trine for example.

LittleBigPlanet is good fun with friends as well. If Heavy Rain counts, that too (Heavy Rain can only be played with one controller, but that still gives you enough means and ways to coöporate; it's a more interactive way and not just gameplay-wise.).

I hope you have a PS3, though. What console(s) are you talking about?

Super Smash Bros.

The last two Call of Duties are only fun as multiplayer games when played with friends offline.

Halo can be really fun. A lot of the game modes which call for co-op also rely on backstabbing each other to win.

There are some indie games such as Castle Crashers or Scott Pilgrim

Mortal Kombat 9 has a four player tag-team mode.

I have no idea why L4D isn't four player co-op offline. Seriously, are there any 4-player offline zombie shooters this generation?

Overall, the game industry is changing to screw offline multiplayer over. They want you guys to buy more games.
