Balrog. Great big old fiery demon with a sword and whip made of fire? Hells yeah. He even Kills Gandalf the Grey, allowing him to become the most badass character over most of Middle Earth--Gandalf the White

Gotta say the Balrog. I was like "Phwoar!" when I saw him all those years ago.

Gimli because he gets the only good lines in the movie.
Also Borimir because he, in the one book he was in, had the the deepist, most believible caracter in the entire danm seires

Samwise Gamgee

Both in the books and in the films, he was the true hero. The guiding force for good. And he did it while still only being human (hobbit.)

Gandalf or Sam.

Gandalf because he is a fucking awesome wizard and often the voice of reason. (With the best one liners)

Sam because he is a true person and has a great, honest friendship with Frodo (who I always found annoying to be honest)

Gimli, definitely. While the movies were definitely good, most characters had a predefined role for the viewer. As in, Legolas was the character that was meant to be everybody's favourite. Boroimir was the character that everybody was meant to hate first but later feel compassion with because of his heroism. Etc, etc. Gimli is really the underdog and I prefer him for this reason.

If we're talking about LOTR in general and not the movies, probably Frodo or Samwise. On second thought, Samwise, because of what New Troll said.

I was about to say Finwe (for standing alone against Melkor, and having an entire <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWDR_ncgqwg>Blind Guardian song dedicated to him), but that's not specifically LotR.

Sam, then. A paragon of loyalty and friendship, temporary Ring bearer, and took on the mother of all giant demonic spiders* and won.

*Yes, I realize that's actually Ungoliant.

I liked Sam. Frodo never would have made it to Mordor without Sam.

He is like the loyal best friend you never really pay attention to until he takes a bullet for you and dies and you wish you paid more attention to him.
