Mass Effect 1 is my favorite, the look on my face when vigil drops the big twist on you was a picture.

Mass Effect 1. (2 was good, but more for the gameplay & cinematics rather than story)
Elder Scrolls has some decent stuff somewhere in that giant of a thing

Hmm.. I'm out

Well. The Warcraft lore is by far the best I've seen in games.

But counting just a single game it has to be Mass Effect.

Loved KoTOR, Loved Mass Effect 2, there were some bits in Saints Row 2 that were good but overall not the greatest storytelling...

Ratchet and clank 3, for its comedic themes and satire of cliched sci-fi villains.

Final Fantasy 9; simple, great replay value, and excellent character developement.
I personally didn't like the ATE system. It left the story disjointed and combat restricted.
(in my opinion)

Planescape Torment, it was...personal, had unique way of exploring world [talking with the dead, and your items, remembering stuff from your previous life (wich occured in wierd situations, like while playing chess with prostitute)]

Very interesting and hard to answer...hmmm...

I'm gonna have to call a three-way tie. A menage-a-trois of game story goodness:

The Silent Hill series (most notably the first one), Final Fantasy 7, and Chrono Trigger.

The game with the most unpredictable storyline for me would be Baldur's gate 2. It's probably my favourite because it was interesting, epic and had so many plot twists. I loved all the side plots too, since they were also well thought out, and usually there was alot of comic relief weaved in between all the darkness of the main plot :)

The storyline from final fantasy viii was always the one that got to me though - wasn't my favourite, but it holds so much nostalgia for me.
