The question is straight forward, so I'll answer with mine. While I like the Thomson smg, my love for assault rifles means I have to go with the STG-44 for coming up with the innovation that allowed assault rifles to get where they are today.

The nuclear bomb. The weapon so powerful, nobody will use it. It even stopped the two world super-powers from waging full-scale war on each other. I mean, the Cold War was no picnic, but a conventional war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact would've torn the world apart far worse than WWII.

I've always been drawn to the M1 Garand. Partly because it looks sleek and bad-ass and partly because it is very powerful (Mythbusters showed it easily punching through a block of bullet-proof glass and vaporizing a deadbolt lock).

Owen gun, for me.

Outperformed the Sten and Thompson in tests (less jams).

Also, the magazine sticks up vertically from the gun. Which is different.

The Mosin-Nagant for me. Partly because of the old Call of Duty games and partly due to this guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simo_H%C3%A4yh%C3%A4

Hmm... does a B17 count as a weapon? Cause those things were nothing but guns, bombs, and engines.

Are we talking infantry weapon systems? I'll take it as if we are only speaking of personally carry-able weapon systems.
For flash or for practicality? For practicality, as a survival tool outside of war, Mosin Nagant rifle, solid performance, you can kill a man, a deer, or a bear with that gun with equal ease.

As for flash? Now that, is a tossup, as far as lighting someone up with a good dose of lead, the PPSH drum mag, was one hell of a hallway clearer, spitting a broad cone of deadly bullets at an insane fire rate, if your opponent doesn't see you coming, they're just straight up fucked before they even know what's going on, which makes it great for CQC and dense urban combat.
That or the MG42, that sucker was mean, sure you aren't going to be shooting from the hip with that thing, not unless you're a goddamn monster of a person, built like a brick shithouse, but if you set yourself up in a good spot with your field of fire covering a strategic point, the supressing/killing power of one of those machineguns, was something to be feared indeed...

claymore.

no just kidding, that guy was crazy, i would have to say mg42(despite the 34 being more popular with most soldiers since it could be used to fire single shots) the design was so good that an updated variant of it (the M3) is still being used by the German army and a lot of its design elements were incorporated in the M60.

Best all round tank? - Russian T-34. The German Tiger Tank had better armour and a more powerful gun, but it was expensive as hell to build and too heavy for its own good.
Favourite plane? - Impossible to say. Either the Spitfire, P-51 Mustang, Mosquito, or Tempest.
The Spitfire was the most elegant.
The Mustang the most effective.
The Mosquito the most practical.
The Tempest was the fastest.
The Messerschmidt Me 262 Schwalbe (Swallow) wasn't bad either.

M1 Garand. Accurate, powerful, and fast in the right hands. My friend has one, and its fun as hell to shoot. The " Ka-ting!" sound when it empties the clip is one of the coolest sounds in the world.

Wehrmacht soldiers were actually so well trained with the MG42 that many of them were able to fire single shots with it. And the MG3 is used by many more armies than the German one.

OT: Probably the M1 Garand. It's just a beautiful rifle. Oh, and Schwerer Gustav. A cannon that's able to fire a 5000kg high-explosive shell accurately at 40km range? Now that is some impressive engineering.

I'll take the K5[E] [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krupp_K5].
Sure, it could only go where there was railroads.
Sure, it took a ton of fuel to transport.
Sure, it took highly specialized and rare rounds.
Sure, it took ages to reload and had to be towed into cover after each shot.
... But damn! That thing'd disintegrate nearly everything within a 50m radius of where it hit.

There's just so many great World War 2 firearms - MP40, StG44, MG42, FG42, Thompson, PPSh41, Patchett gun, Lanchester, Delisle carbine.
If I could have only one though it might be an M2 carbine. Lightweight, compact, select fire and with more punch and range than a sub machine gun. StG44 second choice.

Technically the Geneva convention bans the use of shotguns on the battlefield. During WW1 the US used a different interpretation of the convention and used shotguns. However by WW2 the shotgun had fallen out favour, because the smg was just as effective in the same role with no argument over its legality.

What's the name of that cannon that was so large it was mounted on a train? That was cool.
