I know a good game has a great story behind it like kingdom hearts or Devil may Cry... What do you look into a video game to call it good?

Needs to be fun. Simple as that. If you're not entertained, then it failed.

Agreed, all the pretty graphics and art direction dont mean anything if its not entertaining.
To me, for a game to be fun it sometimes needs "pretty graphics and art direction". So, for me, a "good game" needs a lot more then just good game play. I agree however, that if it isn't entertaining me with anything but graphics, it generally fails to fall into my categorization of a "good game".

Fun with good controls. Don't care as much about story; Painkiller has very little story, yet it's a great game.

Controls obviously, but the rest depends on the genre I think. Sports games need great gameplay and at least very good graphics, adventure/action games IMO need good storylines and decent characters as well.

I think what makes a good game into a great game is having bits and pieces of content that are really kind of there for the sake of it, and that you never ever need to know about if you don't want to. I'm thinking of things like books in Oblivion, sidequests in Fallout 3 and the bizarre codec conversations in Metal Gear Solid. Things which flesh out the game world.

Funamentally it has to be fun. Graphics, gameplay story, details are what can mean the difference between a good game and a great game. Humour helps too.

Personally the Metal Slug series will always be one of all-time favourites. It's got excellent graphics, it's fun to play, there's humour, there is a story but you don't necessarily need it. It also has lots of variety, I mean when you can start a level fighting soldiers and tanks etc, be battling carnivorous plants in the middle and round it all up with a duel against the ancient Japanese sun God, you-... I don't know what to end that point with. Blast it!

Needs almost constantly more than 25-30 FPS. Any less than that and I get antsy.

Needs to entertain me, or enthrall me. Or both.

Gameplay. To enjoy the game I need to be able to play it.
Exactly. Story and characters mean nothing if the game doesn't play well. Gameplay comes first and foremost, no matter what game it is. Any good platformer is still a good game today, and some of them are the most absurdely-written pieces of work you'll ever find.

After gameplay comes whatever is best about a game. If it's the characters, the art-style, the music or the story, it all follows on from a game that plays well.
