Seriously, I have been pondering on this for a while.

Is it the games you play?
Taking gaming seriously as a media?

You guys tell me.

Well...probably the fact that it's a hobby that I'm willing to go the extra mile for (i.e. pay money). For example, I hike a lot, but I only take free trails and I don't have any fancy equipment and the like.

With games, I've definitely invested a lot more of my savings XD I've also invested a lot of time, but I consider that the min cost of any good hobby.

I'd say it's going out of your way to play games. Because sitting down to play some call of duty of whatever doesn't mean anything... in fact it's becoming very common. But to be a gamer means that you sit down and play because you enjoy it, not because you've got a buddy over and you're doing shots.

I play games, therefore I'm a gamer. Anyone can be a gamer if they want to be. Any other definition, like basing it off the games you play is just elitism :D

I feel that games have the potential to be the best medium for telling a story, and believe games are art. I also like music without lyrics, and only games and anime make decent lyric-less music, anime being another thing I watch. But they don't make me a gamer, they're just underlying aspects I enjoy about gaming.

I'm a gamer because I play games, and as a whole I enjoy the medium. In the same way I'm an otaku, despite not liking most of the shovelwear out there like games, yet I'm not a.... filmer? film lover? because while I don't like most films in the same way as anime, the difference is on the whole I don't like the medium. That was incredibly badly explained, my bad.

It's playing games basically.

Unfortunately 'gamer' doesn't mean anything any more.
Pretty much this.

The only thing that makes someone a gamer is, well, playing games.

I've gamed since 1985 (yay Atari 2600, how I miss thee) however someone that started gaming 3 days ago is still a gamer.

Anyone who plays a game is a 'gamer'. That title is, for the most part, self given. I think that people who consistently call themselves 'gamers' are a mixture of what you just said. They play games (of any kind) regularly, take gaming as seriously as any other form of media and allow the culture of 'gaming' that has developed to influence their own social consciousness.

I see it as not only someone who devotes a good amount of their free time to the hobby, but those who are very knowledgable about games as well. I see a gamer as a sort of a video game aficionado.

I wouldn't say just me playing games makes me a gamer. I run a lot, but I wouldn't call myself an athlete, and I do boxing, but I wouldn't call myself a boxer. I'd say it's to do with the amount of time you put into it and how seriously you take it.

Games and the worlds that spring from them have played a part in shaping my personality and who im friends with, I made connections with a few of my best friends from liking the same game/games. The ideals presented my fictional game heroes have played a part in shaping my view of the world, just like many people could say the same about a movie or book hero/heroine, I can say the same about video games. That is why im a gamer.

My collection of games, knowledge of games and my Gamerscore. I'd wager that any one of those could make someone a gamer.
