Alien, Aliens, Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smokin' Barrels, Dawn of the Dead (remake), Die hard, Die Hard With a Vengeance, Robocop, Terminator, Spaceballs, Blazin' Saddles,Robinhood Men in Tights, Naked gun 33 1/3.

Yes they're all older movies or mostly, but newer movies suck.

Trying to avoid the obvious ones..

Public Enemies
Memento
Insomnia
Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Minority Report

If you haven't seen Pulp Fiction, do so. There is no excuse.

Equilibrium was great, though I imagine most escapists, including the OP, have probably seen it.
From Hong Kong I also recommend The Killer and Hard Boiled. Probably two of John Woo's finest movies. The Returner (not by Mr. Woo) isn't bad either, but it can get a bit hokey in spots.

To reiterate what others were saying, BRIIIIICK!
BRICKBRICKBRICKBRICKBRICK!

GO WATCH BRICK! It's the best noir flick for the last decade or more, it just also happens to be set in a high school. WATCH NOW.

GO WATCH INCEPTION IN THE THEATER. NOW.

The Lookout. Very clever script and fabulous acting.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This used to be a household title, but for some reason not as many people are familiar with it anymore. Awesome kung fu movie.

Apocalypto. Good, "manly" movie. Extremely interesting premise too. Takes place before the end of the Mayan civilization. It's actually supposed to be pretty accurate as far as historically based movies go. Doesn't romanticize much.
YES, Inception was amazing and of course i saw it in the theatre :)

Not much of a fan of the crouching tigger hidden dragon stuff, the whole flying stuff just bored me, not for me. If i have to watch Martial arts id rather it be realistic, aka slugfests.

I'll look out for the other 2.
Saw the bloody thing twice and was just as impressed with it a second time. You need to go see Inception, mate.

The Departed eh? Excellent...

Well then I'm assuming you mean more modern gangster movies

Goodfellas
Casino
Snatch
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Sexy Beast
American Gangster
In Bruges
The Usual Suspects

That would be about all I could suggest for anything made in the past 15 years or so in the Gangster Section of your video store. Also, some of the bigger places rent out TV shows, check out the Sapranos on DVD, that will keep you busy for a while.

I also suggest you watch

Alien
The Thing
Momento
Fight Club
Shawshank Redemption (Best screenplay even writtn IMO)
The Crow.

Man I got lots, just Google "Best movies ever"

Hard Boiled, Bullet in the Head, the Killer, and Bullet in the Head are all amazing John Woo movies, ranked from silliest to drama-est. Bullet in the Head is probably one of the best Vietnam War movies ever.

Saints and Soldiers is really good. I like Blood Diamond, but some people hated it.

Mountain Patrol: Kekexili is this really beautiful movie, and you should see it. Not for everyone, but it's amazing.
