I wouldn't 'make' them listen to anything. I'm not going to be like so many asshole parents and try and force my kids to like what I like. But of course until they develop their own tastes in music they'd probably just listen to whatever I like unless they ask me to change it politely.
Yeah 'making' them listen to anything will just turn them against it, especially when they become teenagers. I once came up with a diabolical scheme that factored this in; use reverse psychology! Listen to the most horrendous crap you can find, basically all the music you DONT want your kids to listen to and make them think that you think its cool! This almost guarantees that they'll rebel against "your music" and subtly steer them towards good music.

But on second thoughts this would require a fuck ton of effort and you hiding in the bathroom with the shower running in order to listen to your secret 'good' ipod anytime you wanted to hear something good

it's not about what they listen to, its about what they will be protected against.
No false musicians (dj's, remixers, people who only sell albums because of looks).
No German schlager music or similar shit.
No Rap/Hip hop (90% of it sounds the same and it generally shit)
No dance/house/rave.

and they must listen to artist that care about; lyrics, musical skill, music more than money, good live performance and the fans.

I grew up with my parents tastes in music and that influenced me a lot when growing up.
So I'll lay my music until they are old enough for acquire their own opinion and then we can have music play offs, trying to out volume each other.

My wife has a bun in the oven and we're going the classical route.

It is supposed to calm the baby even outside the womb, because they associate the sound of the music with the feeling of being in the womb, which then helps calm them. It is the same reason running a vacuum cleaner in the next room helps calm them; the humming reminds them of their mother's heart beat.

I went from Metallica to Anaal Nathrakh in a year, sorry man but when they are ten they won't be listening to Lamb Of God but will be listening to Nocturnus, Weeping Birth, Mayhem, Deicide, Behemoth, Bathory, Sadus, Death, Anaal Nathrakh, Circle of Dead Children, Human Mincer and other super underground acts you haven never heard of.

Good point. It took me two years to go from 50 Cent to DevilDriver, LoG and such other bands. Hell, as long as my kid thinks about what he listens to, without just going with the masses, I'll be happy as a Lars suing a Napster

I'm not going to make them listen to anything.
And I hope that when they are older they will return the favor.

I wouldn't force them to listen to anything but I grew up listening to my moms strange music taste which ranged from Def Leppard to Shania Twain, so I've got a similar music taste so I guess it'd be the same for any children I have.
I gotta say I'd be a little disappointed if they started listening to dance and dodgy rap.

I'd leave it until they're old enough to pick for themselves, until then, just background music.
Don't want to indoctrinate anyone, if you know what I mean.
This, forcing my tastes on them is pointless and shallow. No doubt they'll be influenced by my taste anyway.

Boy, girl, doesn't matter. They will listen to system of a down all the time and they will love it as much as me. If that is even possible.
this.

and they will love bass music, even if they are both born deaf.
Hey, Beethoven was deaf, and he was amazing. Just make sure you put it really close to them so that they can actually feel the vibrations.
but Beethoven wasn't born deaf, he became deaf later in his life, but still new the sounds to all the notes, so he could write music.

Dvořák, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, etc - if they were a Romantic-period classical composer, onto the list they go!

This is of course assuming I ever have children, since I certainly don't plan to.
