Like if you hear them, you just don't care anymore and start going "a-huh" every few seconds to not be rude.

For me, it's usually politics. I just don't care about politics, and even if I did, I still wouldn't want to talk about it because you'll either be reiterating the same old talking points I agree with already, or the same old talking points I don't agree with at all. Either way, I'm not listening anymore until the subject changes.

Heavy cynicism of almost anything also shuts down my care-center. If I start hearing the phrase "lost my faith in humanity" or something like it, I can't help but think of you as a sad-sack who blames his/her entire species for his/her own misfortunes. Grow up, chump, and get over it. When you do, we can have a meaningful conversation again.

As a mother...

Yes.

Congratulations, you can perform a biological imperative that 99% of the female creatures on the planet can fulfil, it doesn't make your opinion more valid.

I swear, some people would think taking a shit would make them more important if some people were unable to ¬_¬

"I'm not a racist, but..."

Nothing ever good ever comes after that statement.

"As a mother, soldier, random asshole...etc"

Yeah that is nice, unless the conversation is specifically about something you have dealt with as being one of those things then it doesn't apply.

Politics for me as well, especially around election time. If I hear someone openly attacking my beliefs, or saying something extreamly stupid I'll defend, maybe attack given the situation, but it's usually pretty hard to provoke me.

Another one, especially on this forum- "Hey, Let's talk about circumcision!" Because nothing ever goes wrong in that thread.

Ninja'd by the OP? GOD. FUCKING! DAMMIT!!

Yeah, politics gets me riled up really fast. It's a lot more in school as most of the students there are fucking idiots when it comes to talking about candidates and how they're "not shit." It depresses me quite a bit because they fail to see the big picture at times.

Also people who say that any amount of knowledge is worthless makes me want to throttle their neck, but I can't seem to be arsed on giving any reaction as there is such a thing called specialization, but knowledge is always good as it helps you connect to other subjects and such. Knowledge would also help in making some people not say shit all the damn time. It makes me outraged; especially with technology because some idiots think that "click, click, profit!" is a good way to run a computer. And they ask how those viruses came on their computers...

This^ too. One day, I came to the Escapist seeing every single thread that I caught my interest with people accusing each other of being strawmen. It was annoying at first, but then fucking hilarious when I realized that we might have better presidents living in R&P then actually running for president.

"As a parent..."

Aaaaaaand my brain just shut itself off.

Yes, I get it, you're bringing up a child that you created, but that doesn't make you the all knowing being in the room.

Feminism is another one where my mind goes and frolics in the pastures of fantasy and make believe until that topic goes away. I technically should care, but after a while I just can't seem to give a shit. :/

Seriously, it annoys me to no end!

I also agree on the whole "As a *insert profession here*" Thing...

It's just your opinion, no need to state such a thing.
Wait , added your profession SHOULD make their opinion more valid , assuming that the topic is somethinf related to said profession . I mean i rather have medical advice from a doctor than a carpenter ....

OT: Someone once told me : " If you want to stay friends with someone , avoid talking about religion and politics" . So i avoid those topics alltogether . Also , "i'm not racist but..." makes me lose all interest in the person. Periode . I have 0 tolerence for racism of any kind .

Dude..."I'm not racist, but" HAS legitimate applications.
I'm not racist, for instance, but sometimes you just have to comment on stuff like black people and their mysterious love of fried chicken.

I had a roommate named Denzel for a couple years. Most stereotypical black guy you can possible imagine, with the exception of his odd flamboyant personality. I KID YOU NOT, he kept our fridge stocked with orange soda, "purple drink" (which I did not know was a thing until then), and watermelon.... and the kitchen counter almost ALWAYS had an empty KFC bucket sitting on it. Dude woke up in the morning blaring gospel music, listened to rap during the day, and switched to R&B at night.
Some days I wonder if Denzel was just messing with us (his 2 white and 1 middle-eastern roommates), but there's no way someone would keep that up for 2 years, right?

In my Game Design class we were talking about having a party the last week of school. The professor was all "we could get some pizza!" the class-clown dude was like "HELL YEA, and we'll get some hookers and blow and PAAAAARTAY!"(completely joking, obviously), and then a black dude in the back of the class goes "Oh shit, man! Can we get some fried chicken up in here too?!"(he was dead serious) The whole class just missed a beat and then burst out laughing. Poor dude look confused for a minute til he realized what he'd said.

How do you explain that?

So, "I'm not racist, but dude...black people seem to love them some fried chicken."

Sometimes it's a legit phrase.

I also enjoy making sweeping generalizations of an entire race based on one person. No the phrase is not valid. Anytime someone says "I'm not racist, but," you can safely ignore anything they have to say.

Thank you for doing the exact thing that annoys me so . I no longer consider you are able to contibute anything positive to my stay here at the escapists , and thus you shall go on my ignore list . Your friend is the exact reason i don't associate myself with most black males, they make us look bad . Yes , us . Not only did you manage to annoy me , but you managed to offend me at the same time . You're 2/2 , here have a cookie. I hope you friend ends up where black males "stereotipically" end up . Shot or in jail . I'm not racist but...

linking to red letter media's reviews when discussing the star wars prequels as if they were the irrefutable gospel on the quality of those movies, and acting as if we're just not aware of, and have not seen said reviews. So in other words, make your own damn arguments in your own damn words. even if it covers similar ground to RLM's reviews at least try to make your own argument.

Well, I guess that IS where the stereotyping actually does stop with him. He's a super studious engineering student. His personality reminds me of Cee-Lo Green.

Poor krazykidd, gettin' all pissy about people making observations about reality. That makes just as much sense as getting mad at someone for saying "I'm no meteorologist, but the weather sure feels humid today.", or "I'm no librarian, but that encyclopedia sure has an awful lot of pages."

*shrug*

Gods forbid people be allowed to make observational statements without some sort of judgement attached to those statements...

Getting mad about that makes as much sense someone saying to me that white people can't dance, or gamers love Halo.
I can't dance. I hate Halo. Should I be offended by one of those? No. A lot of white people can't dance, and a lot of gamers like Halo...
I'm not sure how either of these statements or any analogous statement is supposed to offended me.

Maybe if it was something more extreme than liking chicken or not being able to dance. Something that sounds like an accusation..."I'm not racist, but Germans sure seem to hate Jews." (FTR, I'm half German, and that's a bunch of nonsense.)
THAT I could understand being upset by.
That's almost like character assassination by association, and is provocative enough to make people overlook that it doesn't say "All Germans" or even "Most Germans", because it's tied to a huge historical event where Germans and Jews...uh....yea. Bad stuff.

So far as I know, there wasn't ever an epidemic of black people descending on the world's fried chicken like a plague of locusts to set the precedent that a love of chicken should be assumed as a universal trait, and so I can't see people assuming an entire race would all automatically love the same thing...because that's not how people work....
Likewise, I think it's pretty absurd to believe that anyone believes "white people can't dance" or "gamers love Halo" would be universally true traits, because there hasn't been any sort of overwhelming, seemingly exceptionless indicator that something that outlandish might be true.

.
People get offended by the silliest stuff...

Spent a very long time in my life listening to people say "I bet you/they don't really think that, I believe that deep down inside you/they are a very nice person!"

No. Just no. I will immediately end the topic of conversation or the entire conversation righ there. When people show that have a retardedly naive belief that everyone is good and nice inside I will just about lose all interest in anything they have to say forever.

"Sexism" - Hardly ever leads to discussion, just an internet slap fight.
"Gamer Entitlement" - Ha Ha, ha.
"Racist" - Then proceeds to explain something that isn't racist.

As soon as I hear a sterotype about anyone or the word "racism", I walk away or just stop talking, because I'm so tired of hearing that word everywhere, especially since President Obama decided to even think about running for president.

I know it's a real issue, but I'd like to think people don't like other people for things more sophisticated than skin color. Or better yet, stop crying out racism while saying something racist about someone else. It drives me up a wall and makes me want to hit things.

And bringing up religion in any context. Nope, not going there. Don't even talk about it. My POV will be different from yours and you will walk away dissapointed, offended, or trying to convince me of my wrongness and all of them will make me want to pinch you or leave me worrying that I just burned a nice bridge. If 13 years of religious education didn't change that, a five minute conversation with you won't either.

"I listened to (Insert Band Name Here) before they were cool".

Nobody cares when you listened to them. If you like their music, great, but nobody cares if you started listening to them back when nobody had ever heard of them. Gosh! It frutrates me a lot.
