Well I bought heart gold today and played it for 2 hours and have just beat the first gym and I'm still just stuck with me and totodile. I cant find any good pokemon to have in my team - I like to train 5 or 6 pokemon when I play through the game, because its more fun and the game was intended to be played that way.

edit - Also I want some pokemon to have before I get too far into the game.

Post suggestions here.

Mareep.

Great electric type.

Growlithe. AMAZING fire type.

Zubat. Don't laugh, its the best flying type for now. Use it to kill Grass and Bug. Keeping using it for the whole game if you manage to get it to evolve into Crobat.

That's always the question isn't it? Which pokemon to use for your perfect party of +5 asskicking? Silver was the game that made me realise I need to research all the new pokemon (because I refuse to use the old ones) and pick BEFORE I EVEN PLAY THE GAME what my party would be.

does anyone have the name of a site where the list of locations and the pokemon caught there are?

Pretty much this, especially the Mareep part. You could also look for a Geodude; those are handy to have around, and Ghastly can be caught in the Sprout Tower, although that is more of a personal choice.

EDIT: A little later in the game, you should be able to catch a Magmar in the Burned Tower, nice Fire-type choice.

I think Serebii.net is one site that'd have details of where to catch them. It's been years since I last visited it, though.

Well, I've just started, and so far, Geodude, Cyndaquil and Pidgey have gotten me through the first Gym. Ultimately it's up to you.

All good suggestions so far, i may be mistaken, but im pretty sure that in heart gold you can catch a phanphy early on which means you will have a great ground type for the rest of the game.

Not nearly as nice as a Growlithe/Arcanine...

Hm... I'm not too sure about what you should get. I'm just going to get Pokemon that I haven't gotten in my other Pokemon games so I can get high level versions of them without doubling the ones I have. Also, I'm going to port over Jirachi at level 5 so it'll be like I have 2 starters.

I just trained my cyndoquil to the highest level before it starts to disrespect me.
The goldenrod gym battle was near impossible. The cow kept on using rollout and drinking milk.

I usually follow a pattern of having the following types:

- Fire
- Water
- Flying
- Electric
- Psychic
- Ground

Otherwise, all Eevolutions, but you can't do that this early. Try and find the best Pokemon in the areas you can now reach that match those types. Do that, and you'll be laughing all the way to Kanto :D.

I tend to use Bulbapedia. It's got everything you need to know really. :)

Good point. My Arcanine is actually one of my favourite Pokemon, I just don't use him much...

Either Bulbapedia or Serebii.net, they're both pretty well informed.

Going with Typhlosion, Espeon, Heracross, Mamoswine, Slowbro and Ampharos at the moment. Going to get rid of well all of it later though once I've beat the E4.

Then it's Gyarados, Infernape, Salamence, Gengar, Garchomp, Metagross time.

I usually go with the starters, Ampharos (Mareep) Tyranitar (Larvitar - because I actually want to play with him during the actual game) and... Scizor/Skarmory/Dragonite.

These will all be traded once I get to Goldenrod, obviously.

I just beat the Elite 4/Lance using the Gengar I caught (as a Ghastly) in Sprout tower. Only Poke'mon besides my starter I've had on my team for every gym fight. Gengar is a solid ghost type that gets some really powerful attacks in the 30-50 level range.

Edit: If you're interested, the full team was:
52 Meganium
51 Gyarados
51 Gengar
50 Golem
50 Ho-Oh
-- Cannon Fodder for mid-fight revivals (21 Staryu in my case)

I don't think there is a single type I don't have an advantage over with that group.
