What should God of War 3 be like?

I mean should it present some new gameplay feature, or should it be more of the same just with better graphics and new weapons and magic...?

One of the things that I liked best about GOW2 was how it was still God of War. They didn't jack with the formula, didn't feel the need to "reinvent" the series.

I think GOW3 should focus on redeeming Kratos. He started out as a sympathetic character, but morphed into a spoiled brat in GOW2. I'd like to see him use the power of time to go back to the battlefield and choose to lose to the Barabarian King, thus saving his family forever. That's really the lynch pin to pain. The Gods of Olympus fall in history w/o his help anyway.

i agree with alot of you...the way to make it good is to add little things to spice up gameplay, make the graphics look sick w/out cutting corners on collision detection or any other gameplay. o and how bout beta test with real players so we can tell you hey that right there is not fun...take it out.

Yea for redeeming Kratos. They kind of overplayed the arrogance card in the 2nd one IMO. Kratos spits on everyone in sight, directs his people in destroying cities by the dozen, and expects the Gods to remove his bad memories so he can sleep at night?

The God of War doesn't start a new quest out of any of empathy for a cause though, but for revenge. How would he feel if after defeating and sparing Zeus (out of contempt), someone else killed both Zeus and Athena? While disguised as Kratos, thus inciting all the Gods to declare him a usurper and attack him and Sparta (the polytheistic universe's Poseidon could flood the whole city with a gesture)? And the fact that Zeus and Athena's deaths signal the beginning of the epic mythical battle known only as 'Ragnarok'- the written End of all Gods (and thus the series)?
I discussed with some others in a previous thread how there was no representation of the Grecian 'Trickster/Jester' God so far, the most commonly-associated names for that myth being Hermes and Thyce. Like with Joker and the Batman, a more lighthearted enemy could be the perfect foil for Mr. Perpetually Grumpy, as well as our shapeshifting culprit. Just an idea.

Gameplay-wise, there's not much to change from GoW 2's high standards. Maybe include multiple grab-kill animations for each enemy, aerial guarding and grabs, and a generally expanded combo system. Outside that, I can't think of anything big to add- Devil May Cry is faster and flashier, but due to the time period that can't be helped.

Basically what they do with all of the Armored Core sequels will make me happy: give me more of the same just better and different. I don't want gimmicks (ie. if you are going to use the PS3 and the 6-axis fling your arms around to do throws and such let me shut the damn option off and use a button!), I just want a great, immersive story with much murderizing and fun. I'm hoping that other game developers will realize that they don't need to reinvent a good series in order to sell it. Just make more of what made it sell in the first place, just fix the "mistakes".

If God of War 3 is anything like it's 3 predicessors and keeping with the basics, it will be great. Just as long as it doesn't gay up the story like Devil May Cry 4...

For everyone talking of redeeming Kratos, remember, the Story of "God of War" is supposed to tell why there aren't Greek Gods any more. I personally would like to see him redeemed in his own crazy, blood-filled way (going back in time and slaughtering the gods before any of this ever happens, so that it can't happen). And "WhiteFangofWar," I like your Idea of "Ragnorak."

Or if your playing "Tales of Phantasia," then it's "Kangaroo." because the translation is bad.

I didn't mean to sound rude, and if I did, sorry.

A: Sex
B: Violence
C: Greek Gods & Monsters
D: Angst
E: Fix the goddamn camera. Its worse than Devil May Cry's! You should NEVER not be able to see yourself and your target.
F: Get rid of the quick time button mashing nonsense (and no, I'm not copying ZP, I genuinely hate the things).

I'd buy that.

Personally, I'd like to see the game take on a more somber tone. GoW2 really nailed the over-the-top adventure feel, with spectacular set pieces and epic boss fights. For GoW3, I'd like to see the game get a little darker. Like Max Payne, and Frank Miller's Batman.

Or, just more of the same would be fine, too. I'd buy it either way :)

You mean besides there not being? I'm sorry but God of War blew hardcore. A third one isn't going to make anyone who isn't playing it change their minds.
God of War just needs to be put aside for a new, GOOD game.
Wow - you have opened my eyes to the truth. Thanks to your eloquent and insightful criticism of GOW, I now realize that all the time I spent playing and enjoying God of War I/II was time wasted. Clearly, I am a fool with no real taste for video games. Please, tell me what to play next, since you are obviously better at picking out good games.

Fucking teenagers.

Or maybe you need to grow a set and play a game that actually helped further the genre, rather than the same tired shooters over and over again. Did you not like it because there was no mic to scream angry curses into, or was it because the lack of headshots kept you from enjoying one of the greatest games of the PS2s, or even the next generation's lifetime?

1st person shooter...
Or Strategy game...
Kidding ;-)

Personally I think making drastic changes to the gameplay would be a mistake. This is a hugely successful button-mashing hacky-slashy title and, like My-Lord-and-Saviour said in his ZeroPunctuation review about The Orange Box, that is the formula that made it great. Change it to much and you'll run the risk of pissing off a lot of devoted fans, change it to little and you'll run the risk of not getting any new ones...

Personally I would try to keep the devoted people happy as long as I could and milk the cow till I'm drinking blood...

Heh, Kangaroo. Almost a complete anagram of Ragnarok.

There's no rule that says you can't redeem Kratos and have all the Gods die at the end. One line of his that stuck to me was the simple observation that the old Gods really have become petty and arrogant- their golden years have faded and it's time for a clean slate. Roughly half the old Grecian myths revolve around tiffs between them and mortals, or between two of them, usually with a mortal being disfigured or subjected to some kind of ironic punishment. Free-for-all infighting between them without Zeus around to referee is just more proof of their hubris. Let 'em fall.

I proposed a scenario with the murder of Athena firstly because she's the only person Kratos would hesitate even slightly over killing, and secondly having someone else kill her would push him back into his patented berserker-avenging-rage mode trying to find out who did it and then kill them. We haven't seen Zeus' brother Hades in the flesh yet- how about him?

A thought in regards to the game's famous 'Simon-says' button sequences occured to me today, something that could freshen it up- what if there are multiple paths to each sequence? Say whenever a button comes up, you get 2 or 3 button prompts appearing on the screen at once, each disappearing at a different second. The last one to disappear is always the best option, but you'd need to have crazy fast fingers for it. You have your high and low-risk options, just like the main gameplay.

I think they should make GoW3 good this time. Ohh burn!

Nah, I'm just yanking everyone's chains. I've never played the game but I'm not a huge fan of that arcade 'follow the road' type stab-'em-ups.

Actually, not to knitpick, but we do see Hades briefly in GOW II. Twice, actually (three times, if you count his statue). He's the one to take down Atlas with the chains connected to his back, and at the end, we see him standing in front of Zeus with of bunch of other gods. He's the guy with the smoke coming off of his head.

And your idea for ultra-crazy Quick time events would be awesome. I'd play over and over again to see all possible paths (or youtube it.) Either way, I'd see them all.

Yeah, for some unimaginable reason, they felt that having Hades have fixed looks would be uncool, so while most gods are still very much recognizable from God of War 1 to God of War 2, poor Hades looked like someone else entirely. It took me several playthroughs to get that the weird-looking demon hades was gone, replaced with someone even weirder who has a buncha spikes growing out of his flesh and has titan-soul-eating chains for some reason.
