What does it matter, every single game that comes out for anything will have a "GAME OF THE YEAR 2007" sticker of some sort on it next year.

I'm sorry but Halo 3 should NOT win. I am a huge Halo 3 fan but please don't drink that Kool-Aid just yet. Truthfully though Halo 3 is lots of fun, as an all over experience Bioshock is a shoo-in. I don't think it's any comparison really, the only thing Halo 3 has going for it is the massive amount of content it has, though Bioshock arguably could be said to have more. I think that the release of Mass Effect might be the other contender for the title "Best of 2007" and little else. We shall see how Bioware pulls this one out. But if it's anything like the original KoToR (still in my book one of the best games ever made) it might have a chance for a come-from-behind win.

I think we are still way too early to make this assessment. I loved Bioshock and I am drooling over Mass Effect, but there are certainly other titles coming. Call of Duty 4, Eye of Judgement, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Ratchet and Clank Future, Haze I think, Kane and Lynch, Super Mario Galaxy just to name a few. Certainly some of the ones that I mentioned won't make even the top ten list, but then again we won't know until we get there, much less can we predict the impact Guitar Hero 3 and RockBand have on video games.

If I were to judge, out of all games up to this point, I'd choose Bioshock. Granted, for those of us who have played System Shock 2, the game was roughly identical, down to being able to call certain plot points out from the beginning, but as good as System Shock 2 was, and as small as SS2's audience was, I can't really fault it all that much. It's kind of like taking an awesome game that very few people played, then updating it (extremely well) and bashing all those people who missed the original in the face while yelling, "Play this, stupid!" Which, while perhaps going a bit overboard on the hype side of things, at least ensures that a lot of people are exposed to what really was (and still is) an excellent gaming experience.

Of course, with all the other titles coming out, as Hengst mentioned, it's still too early to call it. Which is why I have high hopes that Ace Combat 6 will be the best game ever, win all game of the year awards everywhere, and instill in me such a state of euphoria that I'll never need to spend money on gaming ever again.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

No, I honestly see this becoming the game to beat.

Have you checked out the website yet?

Huge amount of content, and that's just the stuff they're willing to talk about.

Yeah, online's not gonna light the world on fire, in fact, I'm pretty pissed at Nintendo's babysitting approach to how I play my games online, is it really so bad to at least talk to the other people you're playing against?

But even with the online being a big letdown, the game itself is just so loaded with things to do, stuff to collect, secrets to find, and, of course, is pure, simple fun; I really can't see why any other game should be Game of the Year if they aren't as much fun.

Other games may be more artistic, may let you enjoy an engrossing story, may have better visuals and sound, and may overshadow this game in depth and complexity, but when it comes time to bring over three friends and sit down with a game that's guaranteed to be fun, SSBB will always be the first choice, hands down.

In all honesty, I have never derived much pleasure from Smash Brothers. It is easily the one highly identifiable IP from Nintendo that I dislike. I would also be shocked if the game were regarded even more highly than Mario Galaxy, then again the least Mario, Mario Sunshine was a bit of a critical letdown.

It's too early to tell. Too many good titles coming out, as noted above. If I had to vote now I'd be swayed by my pro-Halo bias because the bloom is still very much on that rose, whereas I haven't put BioShock back in the 'Box for over a month now. Still, I'm keeping an eye out for Mass Effect.

Heck, it's been a REALLY good year for games this year. We're spoiled for choice, and (to thieve another quote) that's a Good Thing (tm).

Backyard Baseball 2007.

(If you can't tell, I am being sarcastic. If I really had to choose, I'd go with World in Conflict.)

Out of the games that I've played, BioShock. Next would be Halo 3. The other games that I see as contenders aren't out yet (demos don't count), so I can't know if they're better.

What WILL win: Hypo 3.

What SHOULD win: Yknow I want to stop these contests. It's different for different tastes. Many of the people I know think Garry's Mod should win. It's just become so much of a fan BATTLE instead of liking EACH game, I think they shouldn't be trumpeting certain ones over others at certain points.

I'm really hoping Team Fortress 2 gets it but I have strong doubts.

Katana brought up a good point. Portal probably (99% sure) will not win, but it looks so mind blowing it should at least be considered.

Does it really matter what the game of the year is? Has long as good games come out do we really need to name one as the best? And even if we did would it even mean anything? The game wouldn't be made better than it was when it was released just because it gets named best of 07. All it would really do is give publishers another reason to milk yet another ip to death.

just as long as its not a big name rap or hip hop star presenting the award this year I would be happy. BTW my votes on portals or bioshock. Bioshock cause of its hype (i actually didn't like it) but portals a fabulous new idea in all respects and needs to have a fabulous physics engine to work

Am I the only person left who is still seriously considering Rock Band as GOTY?

Ever since E3 and Bioshock's release, Rock Band seems to have disappeared from the news and gaming discussions. However, I still see it as the breakthrough hardcore hit of the year.

For starters, asking what SHOULD win in october is a little premature. Especially considering the calibre of games yet to come out this year. Also, there are so many GOTY awards around these days (every single website seems to have their own) that any game that could get it, probably should get at least one.

But anyway, what I think shows potential... definitely rock band is a good shot. Guitar hero is one of my favourite games of all time, and I can only see rock band getting better. What I'm looking forward to the most is never ever having to look at singstar again. If the girls want to play the singing game, then they can sing while I play guitar or drums. Best compromise EVER!

I don't think mass effect will get GOTY just because hardcore RPGs have a limited fanbase (at least people that like rpgs the most) so they tend to lose out in popularity votes.

Halo 3 will no doubt win a couple game of the year awards from various places, but I haven't played it so I can't really comment on its worthiness.

Smash brothers is also right up there. I must have spent 200 - 300 hours playing melee with my mates in high school. Brawl looks to keep the formula that works while adding boat loads of new stuff as well. Although a lackluster online mode may reduce its chances.

Portal will win countless awards for innovation, I have no doubt. But it won't get game of the year, unless they somehow manage to make it lengthy while not repetitive. TF2 could be good chance. If the orange box gets counted as a single game in any votes, then that should win hands down.

I also wouldn't count out mario just yet. Everybody knows sunshine was tripe, but mario 64 blew my mind and all the previews of galaxy seem to be suggesting that its gonna be similarly great.

It definitely won't win, but I think Persona 3 should at least be nominated. It might win best RPG, but that's only if Mass Effect somehow doesn't live up expectations (it almost certainly will). Even being a huge BioWare fan, I'd still like to see Persona 3 get the nod.

Lets not forget Hellgate

I think the toss up will be between Halo, Bioshock, and Hellgate.
The big media spinners almost always win GotY
