today, there is no doubt that i LOVE music, whether it be rock, metal, jazz or anything in between those.

but when i think back to the time when i was young, the first song that i really enjoyed has to be:
it's this song that kinda opened the doors to the music world, and made a lasting impression on me. some bands came and went (hell there was a period where i was into trance music), but this song has stuck around as one of my favorite songs(and albums for that matter) of all time

so do you have a similar song?

I think I first become musically conscious when I heard Teenagers by My Chemical Romance at age 10?

That was when I realized that music was actually really great and I continued to buy all of MCR's albums and such..But I still perceive that time as just uncovering the basics of music.

I think the musical taste I find myself with today was kick started when I heard exactly the same thing the OP posted..

Californication blew my mind so hard I'm still picking up the pieces ^_^ 5 years later I've started playing bass and I listen to so much music that I couldn't possibly tell you how many bands and genres I have in my itunes library

^This right here, as well as being a kickass tribute video, introduced me to loving music. Now it's my favourite entertainment medium.

Other than a few when I was really young that I remember liking, I can think of two songs that reeeeally made me get into music.

and

Those are the two that I clearly remember hearing when I was about 12, that made me properly get into it. Especially because after hearing the Ramones song I got very into them, listening to them all the time. I then started listening to more punk and other genres from there. I very rarely listen to the Ramones anymore, but still appreciate how they made me explore music.

I have School of Rock to thank for that one I think.

Before you judge do remember I was born in 1980 so it won't be a current song that got me into music.

It was the song that caused to to get my first LP (yes folks, people used to listen to those in their house).

Shakin Stevens was the first album I ever owned.

A Hermit's Cave

And it really was that version, the Stokowski transcription, rather than the JSB original, though I love that too...

hmmm....I was always around music when I was a kid..clasisc rock type stuff
but when I like 6 or 7 I fell in love with "Barbie girl"

and then I had an obsession with synths and 80's music

I can;t remember specifically when my taste started expanding, I actually kind of went "reverse" in terms of taste...when I wasyounger I hated pop and prefered old stuff...when I got older I started to love rap and some pop

Honestly? I think it was this

I first heard while playing Need for Speed: Underground

and Started listening to music on my MP3 player because. The first songs I added to it were mostly songs from that game.

The song that got me into metal was this "joke" song (it's still a legit song) by Deth Klok from the show Metalocalypse.

I've since moved on to Bands like Meshuggah, Eisbrecher, Rammstein, Five Finger Death Punch, Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, and Devil Driver as my go to metal bands (My genre of choice). I also have tons of songs from other metal bands as well.

First song that actually got me dancing and truly appreciating music. I don't remember the exact age but I was young.

Now the Counting Crows are one of my favorite bands of all time.

Muse was the first band I ever really got into. Sure, I liked songs here and there before ever knowing Muse even existed, but it wasn't until this song that I started actively seeking out music to listen to.

I listened to the whole Viva la Vida album when I was 12. And I loved it; I searched far and wide for music like this, and the closest I got was progressive metal. Such awesome music.

Blood Brothers by Iron Maiden got me hooked on heavier music back when I was 12 years old. Been a metalhead ever since.

Er... try the music box version of Brahms' Lullaby, maybe? Or maybe some Tchaikovsky or Mozart from before I was born?

Is there some rule I'm missing here about having to be older? Did none of you overhear the radio when you were young?

Fun fact, I got the album just for this song.
And from there, it just kinda went on.

The song that got me into metal was probably this one.

EDIT: Scratch that, it was something by Avenged Sevenfold. But that's the song that got me into metalcore and made me get interested enough in metal to go listen to Pantera, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Metallica, Motley Crue, etc. In all honesty, I went kind of like this
Green Day --> Rise Against (still love them) --> Avenged Sevenfold --> Trivium

Jazz was this one (well, this is my favourite version)

That would be the song,
After hearing this song I started to actually listen to other songs, instead of just kind of hearing songs as background noise. Also, it of course got me to look for other songs that I could like.

Like the ones at my favorite website. You may have heard of it. It's called the Escapist. ;D
