Been a good movie week. I watched "The Machine" on Netflix streaming and it was terrific. Most people have never heard of it. It was never, to my knowledge, on wide release in the USA.

Then I saw Locke on DVD. And "Boyhood" at the theater (as I write, a good week!) and was struck by just how many trailers there were for movies we'll likely never see in wide release.

Yet, when I pull up Netflix, unless I'm specifically looking for something, I feel like I'm always seeing the same drek.

So all, got any great buried treasures to recommend that are on Netflix streaming?

Tucker & Dale Vs Evil. While not necessarily hidden on Netflix, it doesn't seem to be that well known.

This film is awesome, I was kinda expecting it to be shit, but it's really funny.

'These kids are coming out here, killing themselves all over the woods!'
'My God, that makes so much sense.'

I'm not sure if it really qualifies as 'the best' or even good, but The Big Bus has become a sort of weird in-joke with my friends, we'll try to put it on (to much protest) whenever we can. Imagine Airplane on a bus. A nuclear bus.

Soul Plane is also incredible, although it's fairly similar- Imagine Airplane if it was made in the 00's and was just about the most stereotypically black film ever. Snoop Dogg is in it as the pilot, shenanigans ensue.

Contracted was a very good if kinda slow psychological horror movie I found.

Blue Ruins was apparently quite popular with critics though I didn't like it much.

Devil's Pass is good if you like found footage horror movies.

If you're looking for tv series there's a few hidden gems in the selection as well.

Terriers is a very good FX series about a Private Eye that seems to have been forgotten. Deserved way better than one season. It's easily Donal Logue's best work I've seen.

Also though they're not really forgotten both Farscape and Firefly flew pretty far under my radar when they were actually on the air. Haven't started Firefly yet but Farscape has turned out to be one of the best written shows I've seen in quite awhile.

Rats. Not available Streaming. Loved Firefly. Is Farscape worth the investment in time? I am thinking of giving that a try.

I got this recommendation from Marter and I have been singing its praises ever since.

RUBBER

Do you like dark and absurd comedies? Then this is the movie for you! Here is the synopsis that I just wrote:

"A tire with psychic powers falls in love with a woman. The tire travels across the land trying to get the ladies attention while killing anything that gets in its way"

IMDB gives it a 5.8/10 but IMDB is wrong. Seriously, if you like weird comedies (emphasis on weird...it DOES have a psychic tire as the hero after all) but I found it hilarious and/or awesome.

Also, Marter recommended it [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.396849-2-50-Reviews-Rubber-2010]. Are you calling Marter a liar!??!

I'll toss my recommendation for Rubber, that movie is definitely worth watching just for its ridiculous premise.

Another movie I will recommend is Iron Sky. It has Nazis that hid on the dark side of the moon after WW2 and are finally able to come back after getting the computing power of an iPhone. At the very least Iron Sky is worth watching for the CGI at the end.

I think Better Off Ted is on it.

It didn't get enough ratings so the tv network had to cancel it after 2nd season.

ITS THAT GOOD.

EDIT: Oh. Movies and not tv show.. I misread :/ But still, if you have time go check it out

Farscape is definitely worth the time. I actually finally got my lady to watch it (after about 10 years of trying) and she's loving it. We blasted through the first season in three days.

The FP

It's the Dance Dance Revolution movie you never knew you wanted. This movie ran at a theater 30 miles from my house and my friends and I all bought tickets to watch it. We were not disappointed. It's one of the best "so bad it's good" movies I've ever seen. The first 10 minutes are on youtube if you want to see the opening, but I'm not going to link to it because it has topless women who appear for no good reason.

Seriously, watch it, it's fantastic.

Grave Encounters is the scariest movie I've ever seen. It starts out really, really cheesy and lame, but halfway through it starts getting good, and when it does, it gets really good.

Skip the sequel though. It's one of those movies that's so bad it harms the one that came before it.

I recommend Luther all the time and everyone has loved it. BBC detective series that is about a million times better than Sherlock (I will fight you on this) starring Idris Elba. Only 14 episodes, so it's easy to watch. Also, don't read up on it. Just go.

14? I only saw 12 up on netflix unless I'm am missremembering.

OT: The Perfect Host; it is a movie about a criminal who who is on the run from the law and cons his way into this dude house. The guy at first seems normal but as the night progresses he turns the tables on the criminal and shows that he is actually quite nuts. I cant be more specific than that because otherwise i will spoil the whole movie.

Also my own experience two movies that are excellent that are streaming on Netflix are "Odd Thomas" and "But I'm a Cheerleader."

Odd Thomas is an interesting modern supernatural mystery based around a small town and a man who can see dead people and the demons that feed off of misery and pain of humans. Keeps you guess and has some really neat visuals as well.

But I am a Cheerleader is an older movie about a closeted lesbian high school student being sent to a "Readjustment Camp" by her parents. It's a comedy and has a great soundtrack.

edit: Forgot about "John Dies at the End" - Awesome time travel comedy with some interesting concepts and a some what non-linear storyline that's still easy to follow. Based on a novel by a Cracked Article writer.

Yeah, [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luther_%28TV_series%29"]14[/a]. Six in season one, then seasons two and three had four each. Still hoping that movie (prequel, sequel, or sidequel) actually gets made...

Knights Of Badassdom is an excellent b-grade horror flick. The main character is dumped by his girlfirend, and to cheer him up his buddies from his DnD group take him out LARPing. Unbeknownst to them, the mage in their party accidentally summons an actual demon using a spellbook he bought off EBay. Cue over the top violence, monsters that look like they're straight from Power Rangers and a very silly ending. One of my favourite movies ever.

"The Man from Nowhere". Great action flick, it's sort of a Korean version of "Man on Fire". Totally awesome and entertaining film, and the final action sequence is easily one of my favorite action sequences ever.

"John Dies at the End". Totally bizarre and weird movie that is also very entertaining and really hilarious. Also features what might be the greatest dog in the history of cinema.

"13 Assassins". This one probably isn't that unknown, since it did have a theatrical release, but I could watch this movie again and again. Probably the best pure "Samurai" movie I've ever seen that isn't from Akira Kurosawa. Basically the last 45 minutes is one massive Samurai battle that is just nuts.

A Fantastic Fear of Everything.
I'm not going to say it's a great movie but if you have 90 minutes it's worth a watch. Simon Pegg plays a paranoid delusional sad sack of a children's author turned crime novelist who is convinced that he's going to be murdered by a serial killer.

The movie plays out like an extended Mr. Bean episode as Pegg stumbles through each scene piling inconveniences and misunderstandings on top of one another in a manic attempt to just get his laundry done in order to make a meeting with a publisher.

Odd Thomas.
Another entry in the "Not great but worth a look" category. Anton Yelchin plays the titular role of an unassuming small town fry cook who happens to be able to see ghosts and other paranormal entities. A talent he uses to help the local police. The story itself revolves around Odd having to use these skills to prevent a mass murder.

Absentia.
This one stars...nobody you'll have heard of. It's a small budget horror movie about a recovering junkie who moves in with her sister to help her cope with the loss of her husband who went missing and is in the process of being declared legally dead. The junkie angle is, I admit, just some contrived conflict to cast doubt on the younger sister as she starts to unravel the supernatural cause of the local disappearances.
Warning: If you're big on closure I might not recommend this one. Absentia doesn't go out of it's way to really explain the supernatural element of its story.

The House of the Devil.
I am unapologetic about my love for this flick. Plot is dead simple. A cash strapped college girl accepts a job to "babysit" the elderly mother of a couple and ends up being terrorized. It does a great job of pulling off a retro late 70's - Mid 80's era Satanic Cult movie feel without ever stepping into parody or reference.
Fair warning though, it's a very slow burn of a film.

Lair of the White Worm.
This movie is dumb as a bag of hammers and I completely love it. I can't even give you a good description of the story really. Just queue it up and watch Hugh Grant team up with Peter Capaldi to defeat a race of snake witches who worship a giant serpent god.
Also Capaldi produces a live mongoose from beneath his kilt.

Alright... I got some foreign films you may've missed. And one or two others. In no particular order--I'm much too lazy to format this in any way.

Departures
Pretty much the best movie I've ever seen. Not an action movie, unlike everything else in this list. Lots of feels in this one.

Red Cliff
John Woo directed period piece about the battle of Red Cliffs. It's pretty great.

Man From Nowhere
A man befriends a young girl, who gets kidnapped by a drug cartel. Hijinks ensue.

I Saw The Devil
Revenge thriller. A secret policeman's (Or something--like the foreign equivalent of FBI, as I recall) wife is killed by a serial killer. Not-FBI guy tracks the killer down, and brutal hijinks ensue.

V/H/S
Pretty much the only good handy cam horror movie you'll ever see. It's basically a bunch of short stories. Definitely worth a watch.

The Grey
Liam Neeson fights a bunch of wolves. Very well done ending. Tears ensue.

13 Assassins
Pretty much a remake of Seven Samurai. Nothing beats the original, but this one's still pretty great. Samurai hijinks ensue.

New World
Movie about an undercover cop. Just watch it, man.

Dredd
Judge Dredd remake. I actually really fuckin' liked this one. Doesn't have much in the way of a plot, but it doesn't need to! He's Judge Dredd! Judge, jury and executioner hijinks ensue.

Oldboy
I don't even know where to begin with this... just look it up--see if it interests you.

Drug War
Drug lord gets infected with virus, gets caught, helps the cops crack down on his former allies. Drug busting hijinks ensue.

Vengeance
Chef/reformed Yakuza hitman goes on a killing spree after his daughter is murdered.

old 80's movie called "night of the creeps" its a horror comedy and very 80's so sit back and enjoy.. apart from tucker and dale the horror comedy genre seems to of died for some reason.

sigh killer klowns from outer space isnt available to stream :(

fido is another good one not many have heard of.

my star pick would have to be "mr nobody" one of my favourite movies along with "room in rome" arty film to be sure and it definitely fits into the erotic genre but still a beautiful romance film
