What to you think of minimalist weapon builds in action/adventure games?

This was inspired by the news that there will be a greater variety of weapons in Assassin's Creed 2, mainly that you can steal things like halberds, tridents and axes from your opponents.

While I am interested in seeing counter-kills with the different weapons that we'll be able to take off your enemies, I would have preferred that the game left it with the minimalist weapon package (long blade, short blade, hidden blade, throwing knife) it used in the first game; that was one of the things that made Oni and Shadow of the Colossus so amazing, as compared to other adventure games. In my opinion, it gave the gameplay a certain type of purity. In an adventure game, I don't want to have to go hunting for that one particular weapon that does such and such and find I've wasted 7 hours just so I can see a particular animation. If I wanted that I'd just grab one of my RPG's and stick it in the machine.

I prefer variety in my games. In most cases; assorted weapon-types (instead of 1 range, 1 melee) are varied enough to give a minor sense of personalization. Even though I can kill any enemy with a sword, I don't mind the option of an "increased speed, reduced range and or damage" weapon, an "reduced speed, increased damage and or range" weapon, an "insta-kill, 1 use weapon" etc... Assassin's creed 2 needs variety because the first one suffered from the lack of it.

A knife is a knife is a +20 greatsword of whale pwnage.

Generally, if there is no reason to collect weapons, then you shouldn't have to, because it is then a waste of time to do so. At the very least, in an FPS, the guns are more effective against different opponents, so there is some reason to need different ones. In something like AC, you just need a shiv to shank shankab;e things, having to collect weapons in AC would just be another way to make the player waste time.

I understand where your coming from, a few more weapons will be nice, as long as they don't go overboard

Depends on the play style, i like to have a lot to pick from but if they have a few and make it work then that's fine to

First of all, glad to see SOMEONE else remembers Oni. I LOVED that game. Secondly, if you don't wanna go searching for one particular weapon, don't. Use the weapons you like.

If there were a greater variety of stealth weapons then sure, but it sounds like the game is going to focus more on the action part of things and that really takes away from the "assassin" aspect. What is happening to stealth games these days anyway? First Sam Fisher and now this. Get it together UbiSoft!

In any case, one can only hope they don't eff up the combat this time around. And the stealth, while we're at it.

i don't care, i just don't want the enemies to be a pushover

when i got bored in the original assassins creed i'd roam kingdom and utterly obliterate everything in my path without breaking a sweat

before the final battle when altair ran into the back of a warzone and single handedly obliterated a small legion, then had a dual with their best man and won .. that was fine .. he was well trained and used his environment well .. it's just enough to be realistic. i have no doubt that in those surroundings a well trained assasin might pull it off

but theres a limit .. i herded mobs and single handedly defeated armies and templars at one time without breaking a sweat ... altair's good, but not that good

i know maybe the whole animus thing might have had somethingto do with it, but please, cmon people .. it takes the fun out because there are no consequences, i get caught .. kill everyone and try again .. i'm an assasin for gods sake .. not davy fucking crockett

Variety will help breath life into Assassins Creed, and the increased weapon count should aid ostensibly.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
constantly having to get new weapons since one is better then the others does get old, I mean really a sword is a sword and aside from getting dull one is pretty much the same as the others, what really matters is the skill of the user

I don't think that adding weapons will help AC 2. After all the game's supposed to be about stealth not swing a halberd (or at least that's what I'd like to think). If I want weapon variety I'll play halo or painkiller. The lack of variety in AC 1 was due to the repetitive side quests mainly (and a slow climb speed).
As to minimalism it depends on the game. Doesn't work well in RPGs or FPSs but I think it can work fine in other genres.
