Well if you consider DBZ mature, The first anime I ever saw was the Patlabor movie at about 12. We didn't have anything like DBZ on TV until I was a little older, so I ended up seeing stuff like Akira, Record of the Lodoss War, Ghost in the Shell, and what is still one of my all time favorites The Wings of Honneamise.

I recommend Wings of Honneamise to anyone looking for something beautiful. I liked Evangelion, but more than anything it was Honneamise and Gunbuster that have carved Gainax a spot in my heart. (okay, Oruchuban Ebichu is goddamn hilarious, I admit.)

Akira, that was pretty much the gateway anime back before the genre was popular. That was shortly followed by Cowboy Bebop, one of my personal favorite shows.

Akira was one of my first mature animes. Then I'm going to have to say Full Metal Alchemist. <3

If you're judging maturity by the letter stuck on the box, then you need to reassess your standards. Maturity is more than blood and titties. Hell, it's pretty much the opposite.

Edit: Alright by "mature" I mean an anime that has a great plot, characters, and makes you feel like your watching something that makes you think.
Voila. And if you're seriously comparing Wolf's Rain to goddamn Naruto in terms of maturity then I'm afraid your opinion from here on out if nothing to me.
Maturity is very subjective. The only more or less objective way to measure it is by the letter on the box. It doesn't mean that I care - I've watched plenty of "r" rated things before I was 12... But the point is, maturity is like beauty. It's not defined.

So yeah, you should be judging it by the box because otherwise it's pretty pointless because if you dig enough, just about any issue can be considered "mature". Have you seen last fuckin' Alf (or whatever those horrible kids tv series were called) episode? He gets caught by agents who said multiple times that they were going to cut him open and experiment. But the series are rated G or PG or something like that.

So, objectively speaking, it's a G rated movie. Despite all the obviously implied kidnapping, murder, and so on being performed on, well, the main character.

I can't remember if it was FLCL or Elfen Lied I saw first, but it was definitely one of those two.

Cyber City OEDO 808, very violent, typical 90'ties anime.
Rented it at the local videostore, awesome stuff.
Blood, sex, violence, a world opened up to a little kid.

Agreed, though I didn't think Elfen Lied sucked, but it wasn't great.
Really who ever wrote FLCL was on pot, or crack, or something like that. Aside from the initial WTF factor it was good overall. another favorite is Gurren Lagann
