Ghost in the Shell. God that really opened my mind to a whole new style.
Same here!

I actually didn't even know it was a real movie.
As a kid, I had always been intrigued by the clip of 'King og my castle' by 'Wamdue Project'.
I always thought to myself: "Damn, that would make for a really cool full-length movie."

Imagine my excitement when, several years later, I encountered the DVD of 'Ghost in the Shell'.
I had discovered anime.

It seems so stupid looking back, not even realizing the music clip simply consisted of outtakes from that film.
Good times...

I've never really been into anime so I'd say Cowboy Bebop which is pretty much the only anime I've watched. But, I did watch Jin Roh the other day, it didn't seem to be to bad.

Hellsing(2001 series), saw that when I was in High School. At a friends house on their pc, did buy my own copy when a boxset came out in the uk a few years ago.

The first anime I ever saw was at age 9 late night on TV.

It was called Akira, and I'm not sure any animated film left as strong a mark as that did.

Hellsing (not the OVA) and it's been my favourite since, still hoping for a series 2 >.<

I don't watch anime. I loathe it.

Also, I couldn't have been the only person who immediately thought of disturbing hentai when I saw the words "mature anime."
You aren't the only one, I'm with you man.

And never watched a anime apart from when I was a kid e.g pokemon and yu-gi-oh.

So what's you first mature Anime?

Edit: Alright by "mature" I mean an anime that has a great plot, characters, and makes you feel like your watching something that makes you think.
Well, first actual mature ANIME would be likely either Elfen Leid or Eva, Eva I know isn't exactly "uncensored" nor does it have much nudity or gore, but it really made me think.

The biological eva mechs, the umbilical cords (and Shinji's utter fear of whether or not it is a good thing to ever remove from it, EVER no matter how emergency the situation gets, hmmm . . . metaphor?) then the WHOLE truth about who Rei actually IS . . . (if you know what I'm talking about, you know what I mean about that making you think) not to mention the Angels themselves and where the story arc about why they were even coming to earth at all.

However, the first truly mature anime style thing that I was exposed to,and am still following almost religiously would be Battle Angel Alita.

A LOT of gore, some nudity every now and again (though admittedly not much, and is far drowned out by the sheer ammount of gore). It was the first truly mature thing styled after anime I'd ever found. And it is still held so deeply into sci-fi (as opposed to say . . . Eva or Elfen Leid) that it could easily coddle me into the genre of anime and manga in one fell swoop.

The storyline is shocking and amazing.

RIN: Daughters of Mnemosyne. Beautiful, but Mature due to the fact that there is 17 buckets of blood in every episode, and alot of sex. (One time there is an important plot thing being explained to you, but you cannot tell what it is because it's a voice over while 3 girls are having one MASSIVE ORGASM! It's very Distracting.

Calumon: Jack doesn't let me watch his mature Anime. The most mature I've seen is Digimon Tamers in Japan. Much better and my song sounds kyousei (Japanese for great, if Google is to be believed)

Cowboy Bebop/Outlaw Star was my first mature anime, I still love both of them, but I can't remember which one I had seen first.

The first one I watched was Hellsing or something, but I only saw one or two episodes so I won't say that.

Solty Rei is one of the best animes I've seen to date and it's one of the most mature to. It deals with emotion, conflict and personal problems very well IMO.

Unless you count Bleach, Naruto (pretty much the first anime I ever saw that had real blood) or Gurren Lagann as mature, then I am yet to see a "mature" anime.

The first mature anime I started watching was Bleach, but I never saw enough episodes to understand the goings on in the plot fully. The first mature anime that I've seen start to finish was Revolutionary Girl Utena, pretty much everything in it was a metaphor and I watched the whole thing twice and I still don't get a lot of it. After watching it I started liking anime a lot and trying to find other good anime. the second one I watched was Darker Than Black and it was awesome

I dunno really. Most of the early Anime I saw was the usual circuit of Akira, Ghost in the Shell and what not - mature, but all feature length. Probably the first truly mature series I've seen (and I don't really count Naruto in this) is Welcome to the NHK.

I don't know what the first one I actually saw was. I used to watch Saturday anime on the Sci Fi channel (Probably about 15 or so years ago.). I know I saw Akira and Project A-Ko on there, along with a whole host of other great movies, but I want to say that the original Vampire Hunter D was the first one I saw. Either that or Tank Police.

Bible Black. I know you don't mean that, but it was the first anime I watched. And no, I didn't do it willingly. Someone said I had to watch it because it was '*****'n.' I had no idea what the hell it was supposed to be.

Needless to say, I didn't finish it.
