When you think of the perfect game what video game genre (FPS, TBS, RTS, MMO, etc) would it be?

Some glorious combination of shooter (I care not which camera perspective it uses), adventure, RPG, and platformer, that has a great story told in a way that fits with the medium.

...or Tetris

It wouldn't really matter what genre it was as long as it has a powerful story that weaves the narrative seamlessly with the gameplay. Immersion in games is important it has to have a story that draws you in and makes you give a fuck about what's going on and the characters in the game, with fun a balanced gameplay.

Characters are also important I personally hate mute protagonists because it's impossible to give a shit about who they are. Isaac Clarke is a perfect example because there's tragedy in his life. His wife his been slaughtered by necromorphs and you should feel sorry for him, but you don't because he's a big emotionless brick. Also Gordon Freeman, don't get me wrong I love me some Half-Life but Gordon Freeman is also another protagonist I dislike because he has no personality.

And if this "perfect" game must have multiplayer then it needs to be well balanced and fun with no glitch's to exploit.

To me a perfect game is one that reaches its own goal. It must be a cohesive whole without anything that just adds weight and doesn't contribute towards making the game better.

And yet it's still real hard to name any game that was perfect. Maybe the technological constraints must be taken into account as well. So for example, Metal Gear Solid of the PS1 was perfect. It's goal was to be a sneaking game that presents the player with an engaging plot. The sneaking was very well done and was real fun. The cinematics were the best way to expose the narrative to the player at the time, and they were extremely well done too.

StarCraft is a perfect game, I'd say. Also Chrono Trigger. Baldur's Gate 2? Yeah probably.

Okay, this is going to seem cliched but here's my pitch.

GTA with zombies.

An open world sandbox, third person shooter set within a San Andreas like map (several cities with outlying countryside). I can see it now, you're driving out of the city as night begins to fall. You look at the gas meter, shit, almost on empty. You scan the open highway and see a tiny gas station in the distance. You pull up to the pumps and get out. Everything is quiet; too quiet. You're car is filling when you hear something in the distance. Shit, shit. They are coming, the car is filling. Do you jump in and drive off and risk running out of gas in the middle on no where. They're coming, closer, closer.

Anyway, I think that type of open world, survival horror type game could be really cool. The way I see it is that there would be a story mode, where ammo and resources are VERY hard to come by. Seriously, you'd be completing mission for ammo. There would be typical missions such as, oh I'll give you this gun if you rescue my daughter from the warehouse, etc etc. And you'd work to build your rep with survivor communities by completing missions and donating supplies, etc.

Then there would be a free play mode where you can enable tons of zombies, all upgraded guns, etc etc, where you could just blast away zombies and come up with creative ways to kill them and just have chaotic fun.

Anyway, that's my take.

A perfect game would haveto be everything to everyone... not really doable.

Best goal is to try and reach the peek of your genre, and every mechanic you have to be polished and fun.

Elder Scrolls game with God of War gameplay, Bioware party system, with online functionalities so you can swap an AI party member with a real player using his own character. Also with Valve polishing.

It should also have mod support for consoles, and universal save file, so you could transfer your save from PC to console and backwards.

Yeah I would so play this endlessly.

I enjoy different variations of games so I'm not sure what I would classify as a perfect game. I love mindless killing, so the avaialability to just run about and murder things violently is always entertaining, especially thousands of mindless drones. Oo I also love survival horror and rpg elements. Storyline... Damn ><

Something compelling. I don't know what the current "perfect" game is, I have yet to come by it, but we'll see.
