I was pondering the universe today, having seen the Canis Majoris animation for the umpteenth time.

A spacegeek like me would love to see space exploration beyond our own solar system, and of course contact with another alien race (Actually I wouldn't care if they came here to eat us and nick our resources, just seeing them before they zap me would grant me a happy death).
I would settle for spacebased habitats in orbit around the earth, which I believe is the most probable scenario to expect within the next 100 years.
Leeching our electricity from space will have to be on some agenda somewhere due to all the discussion about it these days. That will probably lead to further ventures in our immediate surrounding space.

For those who have yet to see the animation I was talking about earlier, here's a link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7geP5ev0VI

Imagine! That's a star within our own galaxy; and there's trillions of other galaxies we cannot yet see inside. Imagine what we have not yet seen, and what there is to BE seen in the universe ;O
Arguing that the universe is as good as endless (To the extent that the human brain can fathom), it's a fact that there are so many amazing things out there that we can not even fit into our minds without blowing a fuse. So many different civilizations, so many nebulae and planets that are unlike anything ever seen.

I get a raging erection just talking about this, better stop!

Now, what would you like to see happen in your lifetime?

Time travel, which I think I just equated to movement in the sixth dimension. Ouch. I need to stop thinking.

I think the OP is way, way too optimistic about what human civilization and technology will be able to achieve in 100 years, as much as I wish it would happen. I'm doubtful that space tourism will be common and affordable in my lifetime, but good god do I ever hope it is.

I would like to see the human lifespan increased, and not just for the ultra-rich, but accessible to everyone.

I would love to see Tokyo at night. Simple and achievable.

In the more fantastic realms, I would love to see a Mass Effect styled space community, without the bloodshed.

The end of religion

The end of misinformation spread through mainstream media

The end of bullshit mainstream music and back to the 80's proper imaginative, intelligent music

The end of unnessecary war

The end of contradictory group manufactured "individual" identities

The end of alcohol being distributed so freely it becomes obvious the purpose is to make people stupid

Like the OP said, I would love for first contact with aliens to occur in my lifetime. Not getting my hopes up too high for it, though...

I would want to see the day we develop some form of teleportation device for travel. Also I have always wanted to attend an MLB game where one of the pitchers in that game throws a perfect game, I just think it would be a great experience to see live.

Longer lifespan for everyone. It'd be interesting if people who were 150 in the future were in the same physical condition as 40 years olds today.

I would also love for us to find another race out there in the galaxy.

A damn ghost no matter how badly it freaks me out....a least letting me know there's something else to all this...-_-

I've already seen UFOs, and the idea of life on other planets doesn't really shock me.

I would gladly lay my life on the line for home and country in exchange for an exo-suit or mecha.
Very gladly.

A significant reduction in the dickhead population that seems to have spent the past ten years building up their numbers.

You know the sort, the type that thinks it's fun to throw rocks at cars from an overpass.

Also, the end of the media habit of exaggerating the size of a group of people, making them seem larger then they actually are.

I'd like to see computers that are more universal. Or the GUI from "Avatar".

Just grab (literally) the file or image from one screen, move it to hand-held device, bring it instantly to another computer.

OR (while I rant) a "Soft drive", a storage device that can turn physical objects into storable, binary data. (I personally think this is how the HEV suit from Half-life stores all those guns).

Oh shit, I just nerded everywhere. 8B
