What would you wear if you were a mermaid?

I'd been thinking about this for a bit. Most things were you have humans turning into mermaids or vice versa, their clothes magically change as well, so they don't have to wear the same thing in both forms. But if it was just the person that changed, what could they wear?

Say your legs fuse into a tail every so often and you go swimming in salt water, what sort of clothes would be appropriate? I'd been thinking maybe a plasticy sorta minidress, with no shoes and nothing underneath (so as to not get in the way of legs turning into tail), but that sounds incredibly tacky.

Do I still maintain my male form?

If so: One clown shoe, budgie smugglers, nipple tassels, purple afro wig.

If not: clown shoe, giant purple strap on + merkin, budgie smugglers, nipple tassels, green afro wig (to make my eyes pop).

Umm... a wetsuit?

Ocean water is fucking cold. I have no idea how mermaids survive in deep seas with nothing but a clamshell bra.

Why not just take off your pants before getting in the water? Sure, sometimes you might be in too much of a hurry, but that risk isn't big enough to be worth going around with a skirt and no underwear for the rest of your life. I mean, unless you were looking for an excuse to wear a kilt, then I guess it works.

Well, that is an option, yeah.

Dolphins do, though. Not all that deep, unless they are whales.

Well, fish are fine without even the clamshells, and in terms of body mass merfolk are mostly fish (those tails look quite a bit heavier than a pair of legs).

I dunno how fish do it, but all ocean-going mammals (whales, dolphins, seals) have thick layers of fat keeping their organs insulated from the cold.

So I guess I can wear whatever I want so long as I keep packing down the ice-cream and fast food?

More or less. By extension, would they live in places that are cold above the water?

I'd probably go with nothing, depending on whether or not there are scales over my chest.

I'm not really sure, although I'd definitely want a bra to cover my gills just because that would be awesome. I probably wouldn't wear that much, maybe a snorkel or some swimming goggles as my human head wouldn't be able to see a thing in the murky depths.

Feather boas. Just several feather boas covering what needs to be covered so as not to get arrested. If you need to ask why, you really should just try it someday. I would be fucking majestic.

The legs wouldn't necessarily have to fuse together.
I'd assume in the transformation your tailbone would grow out into a tail while the legs would atrophy.

I guess I'd have to wear something tight-fitting that works in water...

Probably an vest, maybe a wristband? I dunno.

If I was THIS kind of mermaid though:

Then Jeans, simple. No shoes, I hate them being wet.

I'd probably just stay naked in the sea. I'd have scales for modesty, and I don't have breasts to cover Little Mermaid style.
